Shot Tower Coffee on Facebook
Ran into Mat Derago and Mariel Freeman last night — they're the couple opening a Stumptown-dispensing coffee house on the corner of Sixth and Christian, and they shared details with Adam Erace back in September. Turns out they're tweaking the name, originally Commonwealth — the café, which should be open in the next two to three weeks, will be called Shot Tower Coffee. Here they are on Facebook and Twitter.

Madeline Hoefer and her husband Werner, both of whom have decades of experience in the F&B biz, have taken over Fairmount's Flying Saucer (2545 Brown St.) and will reopen the dormant café on Nov. 19. The coffee shop, which closed in July of this year, has been given a retro '50s makeover with literal interpretations of the name galore — look out for the UFO artwork, ET-friendly logo and "Deep Space Decaf," "Nebula Blend" and "Cosmic Roast" coffees from Souderton's One Village. Hoefer says Flying Saucer Café will also carry Premium Steap teas and an array of sweets and baked goods from South Philly's Traveling Hat Bake Shop and Tea Room, plus housemade soups, chilis, hummus and more.

This Thursday at 7 p.m., Philadelphia's Thursday Night Throwdown latte art contest, aka TnT, returns to Spruce Street Espresso (1101 Spruce St.) Professional and at-home baristas alike are invited to take part in pouring lattes in a tournament-style competition for cash and other prizes, including the Grinder Burr Medal currently held by Aaron Ultimo of Ultimo Coffee, who took first prize in September's TnT at Chestnut Hill Coffee. (That's his handiwork above.) The Throwdown is $5 to enter, but free to watch. There will be pizza from Gianfranco, beer from Philadelphia Brewing Co., and even a costume contest with a $50 prize for the best get-up. Check out our report from July's Throwdown at Spruce Street.

David Arrell, proprietor of the very popular Good Karma Cafe at 22nd and Pine, opened his second coffee house on Saturday. The new Good Karma (928 Pine St.), which we first mentioned in April, is more than twice the size of the original and features a separate quiet area for study or group meetings. Same food and coffee approach, but Arrell plans on expanding his offerings a bit here since he has the added room. Same hours as the original cafe, too: daily, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Jocie Dye, who owns Mt. Airy's InFusion with husband Jason Huber (shot above for our '07 piece on Saxbys Coffee), has announced via press release the couple's intentions to sell the coffee shop (7133 Germantown Ave.), citing a shift in professional goals. (The cafe opened eight years ago, and Dye and Huber briefly ran a second  location in South Philly in the 10th-and-Carpenter space that is now Mazag.) An excerpt from their announcement:
So the goal is to find a similarly community-minded independent company to take it over. Until that happens, say Dye and Huber, they’re in it to win it. Infusion is maintaining a full calendar of events, while a new ad campaign highlights the integral role their customers played as InFusion evolved from “just” a coffee shop to a community gathering place and key driver in Mt. Airy’s Germantown Avenue renaissance. “Even with competing demands on our time and energy, we continue to improve our menu offerings, and to make ourselves available to the community,” says Dye. “InFusion is too important to Mt. Airy and to us personally to do it any other way.”
Those interested in inquiring about InFusion should contact Dye at 215-248-1718 or jocie@infusioncoffeeandtea.com.

Tonight, the monthly Thursday Night Throwdown (TNT) barista latte art competition heads northwest to Chestnut Hill Coffee Company at 8620 Germantown Avenue (previously installments have been held at Spruce Street Espresso and Newbold's Ultimo Coffee). Competitors will sign up at 7 p.m. ($5 entry fee) and pouring will commence promptly at 8; winner gets the pot, plus some prizes from Counter Culture. Spectators are more than welcome to come check out what's being touted as a "latte art massacre" (!). UPDATE: According to TNT's Twitter, Obama might be there!

Old City Coffee at 221 Church Street just recently unveiled a spiffy new interior, with some really pretty new wood work. Lookin' good!

Just touched base with Mariel Freeman, who’s opening Commonwealth Coffee with partner/boyfriend Mat Derago in the Sixth-and-Christian shell you see above. “We’re hoping to be open next month, or more reasonably, November,” says the L&I-wise part-time yoga instructor. The Bella Vista and Queen Village crowds have their fingers crossed; Commonwealth’s got Stumptown lined up for brew, Chi-town’s Intelligentsia for espresso and no one yet for tea, though Freeman estimates they’ll carry about 20 blends. Chi-chi cookies, cakes, scones and other sweet, sweet carbs will come from Garces Trading Co.; Freeman trained Jose’s baristas during her three-and-a-half-year tenure at Lambertville’s Rojo Roastery, supplier of Garces' private-label beans. Commonwealth will seat 25 to 30 and will be open 7 a.m. through 8 or 9 at night — "We'll see what the neighborhood wants," Freeman says. Not like it’s a commute for the New Hope native — she and Derago now live down the street, in the house where Derago’s parents grew up.

Stopped into the awesome Bodhi Coffee (410 S. Second St.) just now and ran into Evan Inatome (right), who is in the early stages of setting up a café called Elixr in the long-vacant space that was last Hausbrandt (207 S. 15th St.). He was hooking up with some barista buddies to host an informal "cupping" (coffee tasting) for three international varietals from the lauded Chicago supplier Intelligentsia, whose roasts he'll use at the shop. (For the record, Bodhi rocks Stumptown.) The space is in good shape, Inatome says, but he plans on making a number of cosmetic changes; he hasn't landed on a food/baked-good approach just yet. Opening should be in the next few months. Inatome's brother-in-law is Eagles O-lineman and food freak Winston Justice (check out this vid of #74 making maki with Zama Tanaka), who will be involved with the café, particularly in a charitable sense — for example, Inatome and Justice plan on launching a bottled water line to be carried at Elixr, the sales of which will benefit clean-water initiatives in countries like Haiti.

It's so cool to see intelligentsia coffee become more popular in other cities outside of Chicago.
