Last Tuesday, we told you about Gravy Wars author Lorraine Ranalli's plan to battle New York-based New Jersey-based writer/chef Johnny DeCarlo in an Italian Market gravy-off. (Y'all shared some choice words in the comments.) Now comes word that the tasting challenge did not have a clear winner. From Ranalli's blog:

Discerning taste buds enjoyed both pots of gravy and meatballs as evidenced by their quick disappearing act. In the end, its fair to say that the ''war'' was a draw. Both Johnny DeCarlo and Lorraine Ranalli are entitled to declare victory.

We're still not used to this "New York and Philly being nice to each other" thing. Teach us how?

IF only the WORLD SERIES could've ended in a draw I think NY and Philly would share MORE LOVE! As for the gravy battle draw--it proves taste varies, but I give you both credit for getting your pride and joy out there! :)

All the best,

Such a romantic setting for the burger, no?

It seems like just yesterday we moved to South Philly, took the brakes off our bikes and careened, pell-mell, into the happening party scene of the SoWash neighborhood. Oh wait, that was seven years ago, you say? Hmm. The seventh anniversary of the Royal Tavern (937 East Passyunk Ave.) , marked by the first ever Burger Bash, seems to bear your assertion out.

From 5 p.m. to 2 a.m., burgers of "many shapes and sizes" and topped with every sort of thing, will dominate the specials chalkboard; drink specials will tempt those who have to work early Wednesday morning, while former Royal chef and current Rock Tits DJ "Nez" will spin from 9 p.m. on. Burger and beer rundown after the jump.

Starting the Thursday after the Burger Bash, the Royal kitchen will get down preparing favorite specials and menu items from years past, as voted by the drinking public. Check out what Team Meal Ticket, in an admittedly whiskey-toxic condition, voted for. See the complete list of winners after the jump.

Everyone who cast a ballot for their favorite items from the past will be entered into a raffle for T-shirts, bar tabs and gift certificates. Maybe star bartenders from the Royal's storied past will show up... remember Sunday brunch with Suzanne Woods and the night before Thanksgiving with Casey Parker?

Burgers:

  • Rosemary Scented Lamb Sliders w/ truffle aioli, caramelized onions and asiago cheese
  • Bluefin Tuna Burger w/ wakame seaweed, grilled red onion and wasabi mayo
  • Chorizo Burger w/ smoked gouda, tomato, piquillo peppers, and creole mustard

On tap:

  • Sly Fox Saison Brune
  • Stoudts Smooth Hoperator IPA
  • Founders Breakfast Stout
  • Yards Brawler English Style Ale
  • Unibroue Ephemere Apple
  • Sixpoint Brownstone
  • Reading Pilsner- priced to sell @ $3/pint
  • PBC Walt Wit (a constant fave!!!)

Special bottle offerings:

  • Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Urbock
  • Russian River Damnation (availability TBD; De Dolle Arabier on deck as runner up)
  • Duchess de Bourgogne Flemish Sour Ale

CP food events guress Erin Mae Szrankowski previewed this weekend's Winter Beer Festival in her upcoming What's Cooking column, which'll go live here on citypaper.net shortly:

'Tis the season to start getting into holiday beers, and the Winter Beer Fest is the perfect opportunity to find your favorite. Head down to the Navy Yard to grab winter beer samples from about 50 breweries, including Clipper City Brewing Co., Wild Goose Brewery, Breckenridge Brewery and Dark Horse Brewing Co., along with local faves like Dock Street and Flying Fish. Elsewhere, there'll be cooking demos from Robert Legget of Cuba Libre and Jeremy Nolen of Brauhaus Schmitz, a history presentation from local beer historian Rich Wagner, home-brewing classes and more. There are three sessions on both days of the fest, with various entry prices; tix available online. Navy Yard, 5100 S. Broad St., winterbeerfest.com.

Meal Ticket has two passes to Session 1 of the Fest, which is scheduled for 1 to 5 p.m. this Saturday, Nov. 14. We exhausted our trivia brains earlier today with that Naked Pint quiz, so we're gonna make this one nice and simple send ONE SENTENCE to drew.lazor@citypaper.net convincing us why you deserve the pair. (You can also leave it in the comments just make sure you input your real e-mail address.) We'll choose the best and post it here. Happy sentencing!

I hope these will be served inside by a nice warm fire in a big wooden lodge. I can't stand warm beer and I can't stand cold beer on a cold day outside.

I have a sake bomb hangover at work and apparently that's not shameful enough. I went to my first two meetings this morning with my buttons down wrong and a glob of red lip gloss on the side of my lip. Gorgeous. Professional. Make my week better :) I promise my fly will be zipped and my pretzel necklace will be on.

In an extension of our World Series clash with our neighbors to the north, Lorraine Ranalli, author of the book Gravy Wars: South Philly Foods, Feuds & Attytudes, is taking on New York-based New Jersey-based caterer and writer Johnny DeCarlo in an Italian Market red gravy cookoff this Saturday, Nov. 14. They'll be set up in the Rizzo Lot at Ninth and Montrose starting at noon, and shoppers/passersby will get the opportunity to sample each competitor's gravy to vote on whose is superior. (Prior to the competition, Ranalli will be signing copies of Gravy Wars at the nearby Canulli's Meats starting at 11 a.m.)

As far as this DeCarlo character goes the self-proclaimed ""modern Guido for this Generation" looks like this:

And here's an excerpt from his most recent post on the Cliffview Pilot:

Ok, I probably spend the same amount of time prepping as my girl does -- maybe even more. Its about perfectly spiking the hair with styling glue, Aqua Net, comb and blow dryer. Then you gotta get the spray tan on, the Axe body cologne, the outfit (tattoo design t-shirt and jeans). Oh, and some bling.

Lorraine. Take. This. Dude. DOWN.

How is this like the World Series when he is from New JERSEY? Does New Jersey have a baseball team that was just in the World Series with us? Or did he try to say he was from New York and that's why New York is crossed off and New Jersey typed in? PS I think a REAL Guido doesn't know that he is one!

Let things play out in this Gravy World Series and we'll see what happens, eh?

That's right, geniuses. Focus on the superficial. Distract with petty tabloid jive. Meantime, Johnny Boy's focusing solely at the stove, preparing for the big day. He's already got plenty of motivation: Nothin' like winnin' on the other guy's (or, in this case, gal's) home turf. So go ahead: Post more bulletin-board fodder. Cause, deep down, you know: The doll is done.

Take this Sporcle quiz and prove how many categories of cuisine you can name, as defined by the Zagat guide.

Discussion question: is Zagat still useful in the age of Yelp/food blogs/CHOW?

I got a little more than half of these. (There are two caviar restaurants in New York?)

And no, I think Zagat is losing its clout in the foodie-blog age. Especially because their "entire" book is "full of" other people's "quotes." I find this to be "incredibly annoying."
