Pizzeria Stella gets into the meatball fracas

Philly's quite bullish on meatballs as of late, whether we're talking Barbuzzo's highly coveted orbs or the impending Dec. 9 opening of Marabella Meatball Co. at 12th and Walnut. Not one to be outballed, Stephen Starr has decided to enter the spherical protein fray with a new meatball deal at Pizzeria Stella (420 S. Second St.). Starting tomorrow, Dec. 7, Stella will kick off a once-weekly meatball menu, available on Tuesdays only. Chuck down $15 and you'll get a romaine salad or minestrone to start, then one of four meatball dishes: - Classico: Wood roasted meatballs (beef, pork, veal); served on housemade roll w/ tomato sauce, parmesan fonduta and basil - Chicken Meatball: Stuffed with fontina and rosemary, served over creamy polenta with natural jus - Shrimp Meatball: Mini meatballs with spaghetti - Lamb Meatball: Open faced on crostini, with Sicilian tomato sauce and topped with gardiniere

In case you somehow need more calories in your life post-Thanksgiving and pre-Christmas: You've got two opportunities to load up on free snacks today. - First, Heinz Ketchup has dispatched a food truck fully stocked with free french fries to traipse about Philly, from today through Saturday. It's a promo for Heinz's new "Dip & Squeeze" packaging, which allows you to apply ketchup to your food in two, two, count 'em TWO ultra-fun ways! Right now the fry truck is around 18th and Chestnut; it'll be in West Philly later, Old City tomorrow for First Friday, and around Rittenhouse on Saturday. Peep @dipandsqueeze for real-time locations. - At 5:30 p.m., drop by the tree lighting ceremony at City Hall's Christmas Holiday Nothing Christmas Village and look for the Krispy Kreme cruiser, which will be doling out free doughnuts. Today and today only, hit up any local Whole Foods location (2001 Pennsylvania Ave.; 929 South St.; 500 W. Germantown Pike, Plymouth Meeting) and you'll be able to buy pounds of 31/40 (or medium-size) shrimp for $5.99, 50 percent off the usual price. The market chain, which has dubbed the promo "Shrimpsgiving" (eee!), is kicking off the deal to promote its high standards in regards to responsibly sourced seafood, which Whole Foods acquires farm-raised by sustainably minded single producers.

Turducken special at Jake's

Starting today, Jake's Sandwich Board (122 S. 12th) will be selling turducken sandwiches. It's three, three, three meats in one! Ten bucks gets you a ticket to the between-bread experience of Creole-spiced turkey, duck and chicken piled with apple-sausage stuffing, cranberry spread and brown gravy. The drink is free, and all orderers of Jake's turducken sandwich will be entered into a drawing to win a whole turducken in time for Thanksgiving. UPDATE: Jake's also recently launched their "Smoking Tuesday" promotion. Each Tuesday, they are taking their 12-hour slow-cooked pork and finishing it in their smoker. The Tuesday BBQ experience is paired with white bread, red onion, bbq sauce and pickles for $8 in both sandwich and platter options. PBR unveils new prix-fixe menu for two weeks only

PBR (Philadelphia Bar & Restaurant, not Meal Ticket's favorite grandpa beer) is now open at 12o Market Street, and they've just unveiled a new prix-fixe menu that'll get you a three-course meal and a beer for $27. The deal only has a two-week run, from Oct. 31 to Nov. 11, so hustle up and dig into chef Jordan "Red" Sauter's char-grilled octopus, seared butterfish with olive oil beurre blanc and pumpkin cheesecake with homemade sage ice cream and a "shoofly" sauce all paired with Victory Hop Devil IPA. Also available: crispy eggplant "fries," red wine-braised veal cheek and a chocolate pot de creme with sour cherries and sea salt, served with the Philadelphia Brewing Co. Kenzinger. The prix-fixe deal is avail Sundays through Thursdays, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Learn more about PBR here.

FREE gelato at Capoyunk

Yesterday was the last day of the season for Capogiro's South Philly location (1625 E. Passyunk Ave.), but before it goes into hibernation for winter, the scoop shoppe is GIVING AWAY the remainder of its gelato through this evening. That's right: giving away, as in zero dollars. We just heard there's fior di latte, cream cheese, cappuccino, chocolate-banana, hazelnut, apricot, blackberry, blueberry, cucumber-vodka, peach and plum left. We'd tell you more if we weren't on our way there right now.

Tomorrow from 8 p.m. to midnight, Adam Ritter and his Sidecar Bar & Grille will be celebrating five years in business. A couple things happening: Damon Bennet of Back2Basics playing, Botany 500 spinning and, oh yeah, FREE BEER on Sidecar's new second floor. Renovations are totally finished yet, but they're added a stage for the occasion. And there's free beer. Did we mention that already?

Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos for all ya'll gringos) is a tradition based in Mexico but celebrated all over the world. It centers around the gathering of family and friends to honor, remember and celebrate passed-on spirits through celebration, eating, singing, dancing and partying. The familiar calavera, or sugar skull, is meant as an homage to the deceasead, usually shown in bright colors doing something fun. Day of the Dead lands on November 2, coinciding with the Catholic holy day of All Souls, but some local Mexican restaurants are getting into the spirit now. Creepy Prix-Fixe dinner at El Rey $30 for 4 courses, Saturday October 30-Tuesday November 1 Executive chef Dionicio Jiminez is trying to creep you out. El Reys celebrating Halloween weekend & Dia de los Muertos by attempting to trick AND treat your tastebuds with a menu worthy of Fear Factor. Items like guacamole with grasshoppers, quesadilla with brains and heart and tongue tacos are on hand. Fear not, wussies, each menu item has a safe option, and the dinner gets you a complimentary shot of Sauza. Pumpkin carving contests at London, SPTR

On some Food Network Challenge shiz, both London Grill and South Philly Tap Room are hosting pumpkin carving contests this week. Tonight at London, owner Terry Berch-McNally, with Flying Fish brewmaster Casey Hughes and rep Chuck Ott, will be judging submissions (due by 7 p.m.) in three categories: best in show, most intricate and (our fave) best use of a fish. Winner gets Flying Fish swag and a London gift cert. Everyone gets $3 Exit 4 bottles and Exit 16 draughts from 5 p.m. to midnight. On Saturday, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., SPTR will supply carvers with pumpkins, tools and seven pumpkin beers (Dogfish, Sixpoint, Elysian to name a few) on tap. First, second and third places get SPTR T-shirts and gift cards for $50, $30 and $15, respectively, but seriously, can we talk about how fierce their upchucking pumpkin mascot is? Always a graphic-design job well done by the SPTR team.
