Happy Hour is a place to vent daily frustrations and unwind, a time to reconnect with friends and coworkers you don’t mind seeing beyond the boundaries of Cubicle Land. It’s is also the ideal time to score a deal on your favorite gustatives and gulpables. For this feature, Team Meal Ticket hops to happy hours across the land and files a report every Tuesday. Let’s delve into it at Supper. WHERE YOU AT? A block down from the Magic Gardens and in the shadow of Whole Foods, we hop this week to the happy hour at Supper (926 South St), Mitch and Jennifer Prensky’s urban farmhouse on South Street. It was sticky out so we opted to skip the sidewalk tables and take a seat at the bar inside.

WHAT'S THE SCENE? This does not seem like a South Street bar. Quiet, relaxing and downright quaint, the open kitchen to our right distributed wafts of butter and herbs as patrons at the bar sipped wine and ate highly manicured, highly seasonal small and large not-as-small plates. The bar scene was healthy, with a mix of old and young, some in jeans and others in three-piece suits.  A group of regulars sat at the end of the bar and were eager to discuss other happy hours around town, plus menu highlights. Jazz played over the speakers, the AC was ice cold and there was ancho-dusted popcorn on the bar. Were we seriously on South Street?

WHAT'S THE DEAL? Supper’s HH runs Monday through Friday from 5 to 7 at the bar. Hor d’oeuvres are half-price, and there are specials on glasses of a select red and white wine, as well as a beer special. Our particular happy hour's choices were a Malbec ($4), a Chardonnay ($4) and Sly Fox Pikeland Pils cans for three bucks. The food is the real star at Supper, though. They're known for chef deviled eggs, and $2.50 gets you an assortment of daily flavors, like sriracha and pastrami-cured. Other standouts included duck-fat fingerlings with truffle mayo ($3), and the Eat This Immediately-worthy smoked chicken wings with birch beer and buttermilk ($3).  Two generous crab latkes will set you back $3.50; housemade soft pretzels with green chile and beer fondue go for $2.50. If you happen to stay past the HH and want to explore more of Supper’s menu with some frugality, check out the "Daily Harvest" menu, picked daily from Prensky's own Blue Elephant Farms. On our visit, $5 got you kale- and cream cheese-stuffed peppers, or for $8 there was the option of tricolor chard with barley risotto. It's a nice way to turn a happy hour hop into a meal and save some coin along the way.

Right around this time last year, Butcher & Singer (1500 Walnut St.) began offering its $16 steakhouse burger for a measly $5.95 during lunch service, a shot over the bow in what proved to be a hilarious passive-aggressive burger battle between the Stephen Starr joint and Tommy Up's P.Y.T. This year, B&S is upping its midday seat-filling game once more, touting a $15 prix-fixe lunch featuring an appetizer, entrée and side. (Yes, the burger is available as an option.) The deal's available through the month of August; menu after the jump. (h/t Rachel Burgos)

Old City's Han Dynasty (108 Chestnut St.) has been hit with such a wave of interest in its first-Monday-of-the-month $25 tastings that owner Han Chiang has decided to expand the deal to the third Monday of every month, as well. He's also doing the deal at his location in Royersford (70 Buckwalter Road) on second Tuesdays. Wait wait wait, put down the phone — the tastings, in Philly at least, are currently booked solid through November of this year. UPDATE [03aug10]: Chiang says there are currently plenty of openings for the second-Tuesday tastings at his Royersford location.

We're having difficulty coming up with a better reason to drink heavily than Shark Week, which officially kicked off last night. The disturbing prospect of having one's arm gnawed off by a great white can only be curtailed by the numbing power of craft beer, you know? Resurrection Ale House (2425 Grays Ferry Ave.), where the TV is always tuned to something interesting, feels the same way, so they're sprinkling a couple specials throughout this week. Today, they'll be serving 22-ounce bottles of Port Brewing Shark Attack for $8. Tomorrow, they'll tap a keg of Dogfish Head 120-Minute IPA — more powerful than a pissed-off mako! — and offer 8-ounce pours for $4. Thursday, they'll hold a mini Russian River event, with all sorts of beers from the Cali brewery offered "at low low Shark Week Prices." Finally, they'll be doing bottles of Wostyntje, brewed with mustard seeds, for $7. There is no better shark attack deterrent than a peculiar Belgian strong ale!

Today, crispy skin-craving friends, you have the opportunity to eat two very good and very different renditions of fried chicken at two very good and very different places, separated by just a few blocks. For lunch, stop by frequent Meal Ticket haunt Mémé (2201 Spruce St.) for David Katz's once-a-week lunch — $11 gets you a drumstick, a thigh, a flakyflaky biscuit, a side of special dipping sauce and a drink (iced tea, lemonade or High Life — get the High Life, duh). For dinner, pop into Meritage (500 S. 20th St.), where chef Anne Coll just launched her Thursday Korean fried chicken night. Pony up 25 bones are you'll get chicken and sides (plus a big can of Sapporo) for two.

Drew Lazor must not know much about beer
Duh I would get the lemonade
Here are some comments from ratebeer website on High Life

"Warning: Must drink ice-cold to distinguish from urine."
"The aroma is of dirty burnt toast, with corn and cardboard. The flavor is of corn syrup and sugar"
"Aroma of corn, metallic, and chlorine (swimming pool). Flavor of cereal, corn, and chlorine with a watery mouthfeel."
"Smells like a pool with metal sides that a sweaty soccer player just took a dip into. Tastes...slightly better than that. Only slightly."

It's amazing to me that great chefs and restaurants continue (in the best drinking city in America) to offer shitty macrobrew beers
They use great local ingredients, high quality meats and seafood, great wine lists, stellar cocktail programs, great decor and service and then they roll out shitty beers with adjunct and cheap as dirt ingredients. It makes no logical sense. I realize that this has become the alternative to PBR for many ( i didn't say that word that rhymes with dipster) but it might be the worst beer i have ever had in my life
Another example of following the herd mentality, and how effectively big beer marketing and advertising is.

Tonight, from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., Mixto (1141 Pine St.) is throwing a little shindig to celebrate its new Thursday-to-Saturday late-night hours. Some sweet dealage going down from 10 to 11, too. Eric Henney has all the details for you in the latest edition of What's Cooking:
Mixto recently extended its evening hours to 2 a.m. Thursday to Saturday, which is as good a reason as any to throw a party. From 10 to 11, come in to try something off the new late-night menu, which includes items like shrimp ceviche and empanadas, and wash it all down with free Cruzan mojitos and Sauza margaritas. From 11 to 2, they'll be spinning Latin jams and offering more than 20 varieties of margaritas and mojitos (mango, guava, sweet tea, etc.) for just $3 each. Mixto, 1141 Pine St., 215-592-0363, mixtorestaurante.com.

Let’s delve into it at Sampan's Graffiti Bar.

WHERE YOU AT? This week’s Happy Hour Hopper brought us to Michael Schulson's rainbow-splashed slice of 13th Street, the Graffiti Bar (124 S. 13th St.). Open in Sampan's alley/courtyard space since spring, Graffiti Bar offers a more casual atmosphere than the slick color-changing-panel dining room inside. Out here there's a full bar and a long communal table that can also be reserved for dinner; a flat-screen makes this a chill spot for a Phils game. Sampan recently added an all-weather cover to the area, equipped with ceiling fans and heaters.
Photos | Anthony Sica
WHAT'S THE SCENE? It was empty for the majority of our stay, but a couple more people were making their way outside as we wrapped up. The inside bar was populated with suit-and-tie types getting out of work, whereas the Graffiti Bar, I think, appeals more to a younger crowd. Bartender Meghan's iPod provided the soundtrack on this evening; she was also well-versed in the food and drink options and made spot-on recommendations for beverages and small plates. And that all-weather cover proved its worth fast when the sky opened above us, keeping us dry throughout the storm.

WHAT'S THE DEAL? Sampan isn’t exactly cheap, so this happy hour — running Monday to Friday, from 4 to 7 — offers a chance for anyone to sample small bites off the menu for two dollars a pop. Satays are the main draw, but Kobe hot dogs, Kobe sliders, spring rolls and dumplings round out the HH menu. Winners among our group were the scallop and corn satays as well as the bulgogi, some of the best I’ve ever had. There are specials on cocktails, too, topping out at $9 for a Classic French Martini, but considering the freshness of the components in the $6 Vietnamese Fizz or the $8 Mango Cardamom Sour, you should buy into something a bit more exotic. Pints of Asahi Dry are available for $9, while a pitcher will put you back $27. Other drafts include Stoudts American Pale Ale ($6/$18), Flying Fish Summer Ale ($7/$21), and Brooklyn Brown Ale ($8/$24). And although not on the HH menu, check out the daily soft serve ice cream flavor. They run a chocolate and a vanilla variation every day; during our visit they offered Nutella and Blueberry Pop Tart. The trio of tiny cones is a perfect way to end a hop.

Guillermo Tellez's swanky Square 1682 in the Hotel Palomar (121 S. 17th St.) has launched two thrifty deals for lunch. Monday to Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., you can snag a Brandywine River Texas longhorn burger (topped with local blue cheese and served with fingerling chips) and a local beer (they pour Yards, Victory, Flying Fish, Philly Brewing Co., etc.) for $9. The sandwich alone is usually $11, so that's a steal. If you want to go a bit upmarket, Square also offers a $16.82 three-course prix-fixe — Monday to Saturday from 11:30 to 2, pony up the namesake price and get a soup/salad first course, a between-bread main (that burger, a short rib sandwich, chicken salad sandwich, etc.) and a chocolate/cherry blondie to go. For more on the spot, check out our interview with Tellez, slideshow and Trey Popp's December '09 review.

Percy Street Barbecue (900 South St.) is giving away free lunch to its first 20 lunch diners, starting today and running through this Friday, July 16. They open their doors at 11:30, so there's a chance today's free grub is already exhausted — but no sweat, you got four more days to try for it. More details here.

Hey ... it's only quasi-disgusting right now! This calls for an outdoor activity. In this week's What's Cooking, Eric Henney breaks down tonight's Dollar Stroll down Baltimore Avenue:
The University City District unveiled a tasty way to render lame dollar stores obsolete last month with its Dollar Stroll. It was a huge hit, and tonight it's coming back for round two. Fifteen participating merchants along Baltimore Avenue are offering $1 specials; check out injera snacks at Dahlak, coffee at Gold Standard, bite-size vegan sandwiches at Green Line and slices of pizza at Dock Street. Baltimore Avenue between 43th and 50th streets, universitycity.org.
The promo, which kicks off right about now and runs till 8:30 p.m., features one-dollar deals from 15 different businesses — and many of them are edible. Here's the full list of participants.
