Dealage
Just in time for the broke-ass account-depleted days following Christmas and Hanukkah, The Corner (102 S. 13th St.) has rolled out a new happy hour. Running weeknights from 5 to 7, chef John Taus is doing all his starters at half-price. That's dealage enough on its own, but for the thirsty they're also offering $3 Kenzingers and Pikeland Pils; $5 glasses of Cabernet, Chardonnay and Marquis de la Tour; and $5 Hemingway daiquiris and Mother's Little Helpers (bourbon, maple, pumpkin, lemon and bitters, a Corner original).
Gordon Dinerman has barely sliced the ribbon on his brick-oven pizza and Italian joint Birra (1700 E. Passyunk Ave.), but he's already decided to boost his booze program with big deals for after-work drinkers and diners. "The neighborhood has been so supportive since we opened," says Dinerman. To say thanks, he'll launch two happy hours — Mangia e Salute — starting on Dec. 27. Mangia will go from 4 to 6 p.m. and offer half-priced pies for dining in, starting at $4.50 and topping out at $8.50. (For the occasion, Dinnerman's running a new pizza — La Peperonata, with Anaheim peppers, long hots, Fresno chilies, fresh mozzarella, white sauce, and spicy capital — for $7.) For those who work later or just like to pretend that they do, Salute, Birra's late-night happy hour, runs from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. with deals on craft beers and wine, along with a $6 cocktail menu featuring drinks like a Ruby Negroni (Beefeater, Campari, Cockburn's ruby port, orange twist) and the Motoguzzi (Christian Brothers Brandy, Disaronno, fresh lemon).
Jake's Wayback Burgers, which opened its first city-limits restaurant in the N'East (9173 Roosevelt Blvd.) in November after launching several successful spots in the Philly 'burbs, is hosting a grand opening event for the location this Saturday, Dec. 17, starting at 10 a.m. They're giving away a bunch of pricey prizes (iPads, TVs, cameras, etc.) via a raffle, in addition to Jake's gift cards and the right to burgers, shakes and hot dogs for a full year. There will be free grub at the event too, of course. Connecticut-based Jake's, which celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, has 10 Pennsylvania outposts.

Vedge (1221 Locust St.), open for just two weeks, has rolled out happy hour. Every Monday to Friday from 5 to 6 p.m., post up at Rich Landau and Kate Jacoby's bar (or in the adjacent lounge) for $3 drafts, $5 wines, $5 cocktails and $2 shooters of Isastegi Sagardo cider. The full dinner menu is available during this time, but they're also offering a trio of snacks — Korean seitan tacos (veryveryverygood), smoked portabello tacos and wedge fries with porcini salt and onion dip — for four bucks a pop.

Remember this? When everyone in Philly a militia of infuriated Meal Ticket commenters threatened violent regime change when the owners of The Khyber (56 S. Second St.) announced their intentions to convert the well-heeled rock club into an izakaya? As we know now, that Japanese plan was soon shifted to Queen Village (782 S. Second, where Stephen Simons and Dave Frank are plugging along) and the Khyber became the NOLA-fied Khyber Pass Pub.

Opa (1311 Sansom St.) is being very Greekily generous this holiday season where lunch is concerned — from now till Jan. 1, the MidVil bar and restaurant is offering a gyro, plus a side of fresh-cut oregano fries and a soda, for $5.95. Andy Brown's chicken and lamb gyros alone usually run $8 and $9, respectively, so that's some dealage; diners are encouraged to smash the plates after finishing their food, too.* Opa's lunch runs weekdays from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
* This is a lie, please don't smash Opa's plates.

Gene Giuffi at Cochon (801 E. Passyunk Ave.) has a good thing going for the remaining Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays of 2011 — on those nights, the meat-savvy chef is offering a three-course, $30 prix-fixe that comes complete and correct with a complimentary beer. "The beer will rotate weekly, depending on what I feel like drinking," says Giuffi, who's ponied up choices like Lancaster Brewing Co.'s Hop Hog IPA and Voodoo's Wynona's Big Brown Ale thus far. The menu, which will feature both dishes off the menu and specials, will switch up regularly, too. Check out this week's after the jump.

Bar Ferdinand (1030 N. Second St.) is kicking off the weekend with a new treat: Merienda Fridays, a Spanish tradition that translates to a little late-day relaxation coupled with a light snack. Every Friday from 5 to 7 p.m., Ferdy will present select wine, beer and spirits paired with tapas that change weekly; each event draws inspiration from various Spanish wine regions and artisan producers. Tonight's Merienda will feature three small plates, all matched with a glass — roasted cauliflower with sherried golden raisins and almonds paired with Amontillado ($9); a shrimp/morcilla pincho with a Muscat ($11); and fried bacalao with potato and basquaise sauce joined by a 2008 Bierzo ($12).

Munish Narula's very new Tashan (777 S. Broad St.), which just opened in September, has some nice post-work dealage in place already — in honor of its triplenumeric address, they're running a "777" happy hour. That translates to $7 cocktails, $7 specialty wines, $7 22-ounce craft beers and select dishes for $23.50. Kidding, those are $7, too. (Here's more on their food, and here's the dinner menu.) The happy hour goes down weekdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

As we mentioned in What's Cooking this week, River Ward Restaurant and Café Week is serving helpings of Fishtown/Kensington/Port Richmond lunch-and-dinner dealage from today through Saturday, Oct. 8. Check out neighborhood eateries for food and drink coming in within an easy-on-the-wallet price range of $5 to $30. Some items that have us intrigued including the three-courses-for-$30 dinner menu at Hinge Café (2652 E. Somerset St.), offering items like pork scallion pot stickers, housemade, sun‐dried-tomato-infused gnocchi and pan-seared scallops with bacon. Frankford Hall's (1210 Frankford Ave.) Jagerschnitzel entrée at $14 includes a half-liter of Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse Dunkel served with the pork-and-mushroom gravy main and German potato salad side. Other restaurants and watering holes on deck include Johnny Brenda’s, New Wave Café and Soup Kitchen Cafe. Peruse the complete list of participants here.
