It may be hard to know what to believe in a world where the Pennsylvania Dutch are actually of German descent, but the annual celebration of their unique culture has been a Reading Terminal institution for the past twenty-two years.
This weekend, the market and surrounding outdoor area played host to handmade crafts, traditional foods, live music and Amish wagon rides in honor of the recognizable Amish that pepper numerous farmers markets in the city and surrounding areas.
Here's a peek at some of the best of the weekend's Amish offerings.
Here's a recap of yesterday's Night Market courtesy of A.D. Amorosi and Jodi Bosin.
Food Trust Night Markets may come and Food Trust Night Markets may go, but when there’s one on your corner, there's set of advantages that makes the evening all that much more pleasurable.
Standing on my corner and taking in the panoramic vista of nearly 60 portable restaurants, food trucks, carts, grills and vendors at 6 p.m. was an awesome sight: a few straggling attendees to start, an empty street devoid of children, dogs and unfortunate flip-flop wearers. The smart ones got in line early to hit up first time Night Market attendee Ka'Chi truck and taste their tender kalbi short ribs with kimchi fried rice. Smart because by Night Market’s end, the most consistently long line throughout the event, second only to Jose Garces’ Guapos Tacos.
Supper’s chef-owner couple Mitch and Jen Prensky popped up with their Scratch Biscuits’ brunch-a-phonic delights like their “Kentucky Classic” of thinly sliced Benton’s country ham with pimento cheese and house-pickles.
Still, it was hard to ignore the Night Market’s big mamoo, the ?uest Loves Food POWERED BY Graham Elliot tented lounge pop-up with spicy Blucoat gin cocktails from Farmers Cabinet and, of course, Philly’s own Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson chicken drumsticks and cupcakes. The origami heart-wrapped ‘Love’s Drumsticks’ were crisply breaded, totally succulent and lip-burning hot. And the ?uestfucious cupcakes, an Asian-inspired carrot-cake with pineapple and topped with a red fortune cookie and red curry frosting was a sweet end to finger-licking good time.

On Tuesday night at the farthest end of the Urban Outfitters complex, the seventh-annual Vetri Foundation for Children and Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation Great Chefs Event welcomed a sell-out crowd of 1,200 attendees and raised more than $1 million courtesy of ticket sales, sponsorships, donations and auction items. The last one included a multi-day gastro tour for six of Piemonte, Italy, with Jeff Michaud and Marc Vetri that sold for $35,000 and a meal for six with Shake Shack owners Danny Meyer and David Swinghamer that sold for $19,000 to two separate bidders. If that’s what it takes to get through Shake Shack’s long lines, so be it.

On Wednesday, Basic 4 Vegetarian Cafe, which offers an array of veggie burgers and faux-meat sandwiches (BLT with soy bacon, soy corned beef, etc.), will celebrate 31 years at the Reading Terminal Market. From noon to 2 p.m. they're giving away slices of free birthday cake after receiving a City Council citation (Councilman Squilla in the house). They're also creating an "anniversary" lunch special (veggie burger, medium lemonade and cookie) that will cost you just $8.31 and runs through the end of August.
Make someone's eyes water! Tattooed Mom's (530 South St., 215-238-9880) is holding its first-ever handmade hot sauce contest on Tuesday, June 12, from 5-9 p.m. There will be $1 tacos (beef or bean), $3 Tecates, half-price drafts during certain hours and a lot of people drinking cold water. You can be one of them!
VICE magazine's video series, Munchies, tails well-known chefs during their late-night exploits, which, as you might expect, often involve whiskey, beer, off-color jokes and sandwiches. Last month, they featured Amis chef Brad Spence, painting the town red in a baby-blue track suit. Tomorrow, Jeff Michaud of Vetri restaurants Osteria and Amis gets the follow (we hear Mike Solo, Erin O'Shea and Jonnymac also make appearances), and Alla Spina (1410 Mount Vernon) is throwing an impromptu viewing party at 10 p.m. Chef Damon Menapace is putting together a special late-nite menu for the screening, while the bar is serving up $2 Brooklyn lagers. It is, however, Beer Week, and you better believe beverage guy Steve Wildy, whose Twitter handle (@sommillionare) we love, is coming correct with a mother load of weird Italian brews. Take the happy-hour savings and put them toward something rare from Alla Spina's secret reserve collection.
John T. Edge, author of The Truck Food Cookbook and famed food-culture chronicler for the New York Times, Saveur and other outlets, will be at Yards Brewery Wednesday to talk about and sign copies of his book. Edge scoured the country's street-food landscape and collected recipes. Nicely, a portion of the sales will go to the newly formed Philly Mobile Food Association. Get all the details about the event here.
Sampan (124 S. 13th St.) is holding a cocktail contest! For those who want to participate, you must use Finlandia vodka, but the flavor is up to you. Michael Schulson is announcing the winning cocktail on June 28. The lucky mixologist will not only have their cocktail featured on Sampan's menu for the month of July, but they get to invite 20 friends to the unveiling at the Graffiti Bar. The winner and guests receive complimentary appetizers and samples of the cocktail. The deadline for submissions is June 15. Recipes can be submitted by emailing the restaurant at contact@sampanphilly.com, or by sending a direct message on either Facebook (Sampan Philly) or Twitter ( @sampanphilly).

As Alex Weiss told you in this week's What's Cooking, the BigBite food-competition collective is hosting its fourth annual Wing King this Saturday, May 26, outside at the Ellen Powell Tiberino Memorial Museum (3819 Hamilton St.). Twenty-five cooks — as of this moment there are just five contest slots left, hurry up! — will compete for this awe-inspiring poultry trophy, their signature-recipe flappers judged by a panel that consists of SPTR/ASB chef Scott Schroeder, food blogger Shao Zhong, resident BigBite judge Joe Bernstein and yours truly. Non-contestant entry is $10 and includes live entertainment, wangz, Narragansett beer, Spodee cocktails and tastes from a number of other sponsors, including Uniquely Greek. Philly's own Reef the Lost Cauze is hosting the jam, which starts at 5:30 p.m. See y'al there.
Next Friday, June 1 is not only kick-off day for Philly Beer Week — it also marks the re-release of Brewer's Art Resurrection Ale in Philadelphia. Despite the efforts of Brendan Hartranft and Leigh Maida, the Baltimore-brewed beer has not been legally available in the Commonwealth for five years. But the 7 percent ABV Abbey-style ale is back, this time in 12-ounce cans. It's only right that the official re-debut take place at Hartranft and Maida's Resurrection Ale House (2424 Grays Ferry Ave.). Volker Stewart, co-founder of The Brewer's Art in Charm City, is coming to town to celebrate the occasion at RAH, which kicks off at 6 p.m. And yes, the cans will continue to be sold in Philly after Beer Week ends.
