Look, you know as well as we do that there's no shortage of baconcentric recipes in heavy rotation come Super Bowl weekend. Everywhere you look, someone's suggesting you serve bacon-wrapped poppers or deep fried bacon or hell, maybe just feature a bacon-fat-wrestling pit at your party this year.
(Full first-person disclosure: I've actually decided to embrace the insufferable challenge of putting out a mostly-healthy vegetarian spread this weekend, so I'll understand if you just want to write off everything I say from here on out.)
But hey, far be it from us to deny rich cultural traditions or people sending us free recipes that sound tasty. So here you go: three recipes from the folks at Open Air Publishing, who have put out an ebook (available only for iPad and iPhone, boo) called the Better Bacon Book. Click through for the recipes.
Zoë Lukas of Whipped Bakeshop (636 Belgrade St.), armed with the best eye in the biz, has whipped up created these boss 76ers cookies ahead of our team's matchup with the Boston Celtics in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semis tonight. If AI2 and Co. can shoot as sweet as these jawnies taste they just might be able to even up the series against Rajon Rondo and his preposterous post-game jacket collection.

Shank's Original is feeling sentimental. In honor of their 50th anniversary, they are planning on showing a little Phillies love come Monday, April 9, the day of the Phightins' home opner. The first 100 customers who show up at Shank's Pier 40 (Columbus and Christian) wearing Phillies gear can order any sandwich off the menu and pay just one dollar. They’ve more than 20 sandwiches to choose from, including their classic roast pork and a pretty fierce cheesesteak.

On April 4 and 5, 10 local restaurants are teaming up with Young Friends of Team Jamaica, a support group helping young people from Caribbean nations attend and participate in the very-big-deal Penn Relays. With assistance from sponsors and diners, the Team Jamaica Bickle group (bickle = food) is able to fly more than 500 student athletes from countries like Trinidad, Jamaica, the Bahamas and Grenada to Philly to compete in the relays; the funds also cover costs like accommodations, meals and transportation.
Each spot participant in Caribbean Restaurant Nights will feature special island-inspired dishes (Gigi in Old City is doing an entire food relaunch, featuring jerk chicken and lime/beer-marinated ribeye, for example) and will donate 10 to 15 percent of their nightly gross food and alcohol sales to the aspiring runners. See who’s participating after the jump.
Takeru Kobayashi must be a great dinner date, because it seems like everyone's sitting down for a meal with him. Dan McQuade of Philly Mag's Philly Post and Enrico Campitelli Jr. of The 700 Level both had the opportunity to break bread with the world-renowned Japanese competitive eater, who's in town to compete in/probably massacre the Wing Bowl. Both documented their experience for their respective publications. Kobi, as his friends call him, dined at Osteria with McQuade and at Garces Trading Co. with Campitelli, and guess what? He's a true food nerd, just like the rest of us. From McQuade's piece:
Kobi isn’t just an eater; he’s a foodie. He takes photos of everything he eats. (He really enjoyed the octopus salad at Osteria.) He goes out to eat all the time. He clearly thinks about food a lot. He claims he can’t cook, but James says she'll see him frying things for himself on the grill. "We’re thinking about cooking classes," she says.
Over the The 700 Level, Campitelli found it difficult to get past Kobi's pre-meal "snack," but still managed to get him to comment on our requisite cheesesteak-vs.-roast pork imponderable:
Whereas my own breakfast and lunch consisted of a bowl of oatmeal and half a meatball sub, Kobi had already polished off… wait for it… 300 chicken wings, a couple of Tony Luke's Italian Roast Porks and a few Cheeesesteaks, and a whole box of cookies to wash them down. The tiny man sitting across from me cleaning his plate had already eaten 300 wings earlier in the day as part of his training for Friday's big event, the top prize of which is a $20,000 pay check.
Three hundred wings. For practice.
(He also weighed in on the age-old Philly debate: "If I want to have a heavier food, I order the cheesesteak. If I want a bit lighter food, I'd order the Roast Pork.")

New England and New York may be playing each other on the field this coming Sunday, but they're also facing off in a culinary match for the Supper Bowl. Mitch Prensky and the fellas at Lemon Hill (745 N. 25th St.) have crafted a menu of dishes from each region — think chowders, pizzas (Brooklyn sausage/peppers, New Haven-style clam pie), pastrami-brined wings (above), sandwiches and dessert (Boston cream pie and NY cheesecake, of course). For $42, guests can enjoy the all-you-can-eat spread and enter a prize pool. They'll have Miller High Life and High Life Light on special for $3, as well as Al Sotack's Old Fashioned for $7. Lemon Hill will open at 5, the buffet's at 5:30 and the game starts at 6:30. Call 215-232-2270 to make your required reservation.
If you'd rather hang at home, Lemon Hill's sister restaurant, Supper (926 South St.), will be doing takeout packages. Make sure you order yours by noon on Friday, Feb. 3, though. Peep the choices after the jump.
If you're looking for an alternative to buffalo wings for Super Bowl Sunday, Cookie Confidential (517 S. Fifth St.) has got you: Owner Melissa Torre, already well-known for her cheesesteak cookies, has created a hot wing cookie as part of her line of savory desserts. It's got all the necessary wing accoutrement: blue cheese, chicken, hot sauce (courtesy of PrettyGirlsCook.com) and celery salt. "It's just as decadent as a sweet cookie, and satisfying in a whole other way," says Torre. "I think cookies have long been the underdogs in the dessert world ... I'm just trying to push them to their full, and delicious, potential." Help her accomplish this very worthy goal by copping some at $1.35 apiece, $7.90 for a half dozen or $14.80 for a dozen.

The Philly Roller Girls and The Abbaye (637 N. Third St.) have joined forces for the second annual Vegan Wing Bowl, to be held this Saturday, Feb. 4, one day after its decidedly non-vegan counterpart. Starting at 4 p.m. sharp, seitan enthusiasts will have two minutes (the approximate length of a roller derby song) to eat as many "wings" as they can. The $20 regisgtration fee gets participants a Vegan Wing Bowl tee and unlimited beer or soda in addition to the right to compete. For those who don't think they're up to the challenge but want to bear witness to the proceeding, Abbaye's got you covered — spectating is free, Cricket Hill will be on tap for $2 and they'll offer a two-bucks-off wing special. Register for the event by calling 215-627-6711.

Gordon Dinerman's opening weekend at Birra (1700 E. Passyunk Ave.) was a success, so much so that he's rolling straight into Monday Night Football. His brand-new P'unk Ave. craft beer bar and pizzeria, which will typically be closed on Mondays, will open its doors at 5 p.m. tonights to welcome Eagles fans eager to see the Birds beat up on the Chicago Bears at the Linc (game time's 8:30). No specific food or drink specials for the matchup, but know that Birra's got four flat-screens, one of which is visible from every seat in the joint. Peep full food and drink menus here.

World-famous Phillies blogger bolgger Zoo With Roy has teamed up with Vincent Derosiers, master brewer at Iron Hill North Wales, to create a second ZWR-themed beer. (The first, So Cuttered Hoppy Wheat, came out in the summer.) The beer, a pumpkin lager with seasonal spices, vanilla and cinnamon, has been dubbed Doctoberfest Pumpkin and is scheduled to be tapped tomorrow, Sept. 27, at 5 p.m. in North Wales (The Shoppes at English Village, 1460 Bethlehem Pike). In celebration of such a wondrous brew, Derosiers is offering a free slice of pumpkin pie to anyone who shows up wearing a ZWR T-shirt, as well as guaranteeing high fives from other ZWR fans. The lager has been brewed in very limited quantities, so get out there and drink up the Unofficial Official Beer of the Phillies' playoff season.
