Spring ramps
Every Wednesday, Meal Ticket pokes around the food blog world to see what's simmering.
- Art Etchells teases his Ramping Up for Sping article for the Metro on Foobooz, as well as posting Pub & Kitchen's brand-new spring eats and wine menu. Bye-bye Brussels sprouts, hello boquerones!
- That old apple-and-raisin warhorse, Waldorf Salad, gets a Belgian makeover by Neal at Burning Pasta. Click over for the sparky orange-infused olive oil and a brand-new va-voom picture of the blogger.
- Kelly of Living On The Vedge ventures to "high Spruce" and finds that brunch at Rx is still live after all these years, though the kitchen did manage to burn Vrapple.
- Adam's got a bad jones for summer. He admits it by posting the menu for Chip Roman's upcoming Shore destination, Blackfish Stone Harbor on Blogalicious. The cougars are oiling their hides even now in preparation.
- David McDuff's Food & Wine Trail plugs Food & Wine writer and Champagne resident Peter Liem's ChampagneGuide.net. For $89 a year, subscribers are privy to Liem's expert tasting notes for more than 600 sparklers of choice, as well as in-depth profiles of estates and producers for an insider's guide to those tiny bubbles.
Thanks for the mention, Felicia. I'll pass your post along to Peter. cheers, David
Thanks for the link! Please pass along my apologies for the burnt vrapple to the Vedger. Good for them for sending it backâI always tell people that we are happy to re-make something if it's not right. It's your money; you should get what you paid for. Regards, Greg Salisbury Rx

Blogalicious
So right now.
Every Wednesday, Meal Ticket pokes around the food blog world to see what's simmering.
- Sorry, St. Germain. Back of the bus, absinthe. Adam Erace at Blogalicious identifies the newest chic liqueur making the cocktail scene, and provides Blackfish chef Chip Roman's recipe for dessert chocolate soup incorporating the colorful booze.
- Femme Fermental Gina treks all the way to Chicago for the 22-course tasting of a lifetime: the cerebral bites at Grant Achatz's Alinea. Peep her pictures and descriptions, complete with wine pairings, but do not lick the monitor Achatz isn't quite that futuristic (yet).
- Phoodie.info asked readers where to find the best truffle dishes in Philly last week, and their comments exploded with statements as pungent as the luxury fungus itself. Collin & Co. strike back this week, finding a shaved-truffle flatbread in a restaurant where the white hats could face off with the food geeks.
- Add a bit of ugh to your day with a new frankenfood courtesy of The Illadelph: deep-fried cheesesteaks. If only we could tape gross-out blog This Is Why You're Fat to our fridge to prepare us for bikini season.
- Foobooz, we love you. As Adam Erace once said, you're like the Moses of the food blog world. But come on with this one! We've got James Beard-finalist chefs in spitting distance of each other, all the fashion that exists outside of URBN, and more history than you can shake a historic interpreter at. How could this 'hood be OVER?

Drawing for Food
Kris Chau is pretending it's summer.
Every Wednesday, Meal Ticket pokes around the food blog world to see what's simmering.
- Drawing for Food reveals Korea's greatest export. Hint: It's colder than a Hyundai and greener than kimchi.
- Blogalicious outlines a master plan for enjoying the elegant menu at James, including chef Jim Burke's signature roast chicken, without breaking the bank. Oh, and say "congratulations" when you see Kristina Burke.
- If you've got a jones that only cheesy ooze can satisfy, stop by the P.O.P.E tonight for their smackdown-style Macaroni Madness competition. While you're there, take a moment to introduce yourself to Beer Lass Suzanne Woods and members of her women's beer club, In Pursuit of Ale.
- Today marks the re-opening of the Plaza Caf at the Comcast Center, though the menu is missing a certain famous sandwich from last year. The Illadelph also notes The Inky's Rick Nichols' reporting Chris Scarduzio and George Perrier's Table 31 is pulling their fat out of the fire with a re-concepted menu.
- Unbreaded talks cheesesteak with Benjamin Franklin-channeler Ralph Archbold, who tells one of the greatest Ed-Rendell-loves-to -eat anecdotes, ever.

Finding Philly
Goodbye, my love.
Every Wednesday, Meal Ticket pokes around the food blog world to see what's simmering.
- On Monday, Foobooz broke the horrible news that Souf Philly luncheonette Shank's & Evelyn's is shuttering their 10th Street shop on April 30 and movin' on up to a Center City location. Mike Klein at The Insider adds to the story, reporting today that:
[Pam] Poppa's mom, matriarch Evelyn Perri, has sold the building and wants to relocate to Center City. They have expressed interest in 120 S. 15th Street, the vacant sandwichery just above Sansom and across from the Union League. Poppa says the partnership that brought a Shank's location to the Northeast last year has dissolved.
- Apples and Cheese, Please attempts to replace Oreo Cakesters with a slightly more healthy cocoa snack cake. If it has flaxseed and whole wheat in it, that counts as a vegetable, right?
- Foodaphilia wants to know if there are any designers or web-savvy folks who are willing to lend their aesthetic eye to her site in exchange for edibles. We would have helped if E hadn't snubbed us on her Best Philly Food Blogs list for blogs.com. Are we bitter? Maybe a little but in a refreshing way, like Angostura in a Manhattan!
- Not only did Kitchenplay make their own scrapple, they attended ScrappleFest at The Reading Terminal Market last Saturday. Their personal fave? Leidy's offering, with its notable sage and less salt.
- Joe Sixpack reminds us on Beer Radar to fill out a Beer Week feedback survey. Not only will your fond memories (of how much loot you dropped on comestibles, liquid and otherwise) help shape next year's event, you will be entered into a drawing for free tix to Opening Tap 2010.
Ouch! Would a batch of Oatmeal Pies get me back in your good graces?
Just ragging on you, E. Though here is our Top Ten Philly Food Blogs We Would Accept Delicious Desserts From: 1. Foodaphilia 2. Foodaphilia 3. Foodaphilia 4. Foodaphilia 5. Foodaphilia 6. Foodaphilia 7. Foodaphilia 8. Foodaphilia 9. Foodaphilia 10. The Sugar
I kept wanting to try Shank's & Evelyn's, but I wasn't sure it was even real. Oops.

Five Spice Duck
Perfect red tamale macaroons, with dark chocolate filling.
Every Wednesday, Meal Ticket pokes around the food blog world to see what's simmering.
- Five Spice Duck conducts extensive tests in order to find the perfect macaroon recipe. Forget about globby, chewy coconut cookies these are the delicate almond meringue sandwiches found everywhere in Paris, even McDonald's.
- Nicole at Farm to Philly has a host of great suggestions for getting your garden started and she magically predicts that last Philly frost!
- If defending your tomatoes from voracious squirrels doesn't appeal, you could always join Greensgrow Farms's CSA this season and enjoy theirs. Download the application form here.
- Anti-PLCB advocate and malt man Lew Bryson is encouraging readers to call in with questions for PLCB "CEO" Joe Conti and Chairman PJ Stapleton when they appear tonight on PCN-TV tonight at 7 p.m. Border patrols, loss of favorite items, and the mystifying SLO system are all up for discussion.
- Phoodie.info and Beer Lass both posted this wonderful video of the Throwdown in Franklintown, surely the most ridiculous spectacle of Beer Week (except for the Roy Pitz boys getting thrown out of Monk's, that is). Check out Kehoe's geisha-accompanied entrance on the Hi-Lo!

Snackbar is putting out a burger with south-of-the-border influence.
Unbreaded
Every week, Meal Ticket pokes around the food blog world to see what's simmering.
- Unbreaded's Jeff Vogel gets down to the meat of the matter with the mole burger at Snackbar, and has a sandwich-centric Q&A with its creator, new exec chef John "Chainsaw" Taus. Muy sabrosa.
- Foobooz-er and man-about-town Art Etchells confessed his undying love of fried pickles to the bartending half of Meal Ticket last week. No doubt his misty-eyed crush on battered spear-and-chip babes inspired this roundup of bars that serve the vinegary fritti.
-Last week, Ansill chef/owner David Ansill put his heart on the grill, and people ate it all up. Adam at Blogalicious devoured the Euro BBQ, including the lamb heart and calves' kidney brochette, and correctly judges that everything tastes better with agrodolce.
- Michael Klein of The Insider votes University City as the most happening neighborhood in town, and catalogs the many upcoming openings. The server's-worst-nightmare Penn crowd is undoubtedly looking forward to the August debut of The Tap House, a massive bar housing 75 draft beers and six firepits in 7,000 square feet of space.
- If you have never availed yourself of the harsh but witty gastronomic criticism of Philly Market Cafe, click over and check out Gaetano's impressions of nopales (prickly pear paddles) and where to find the best deals on the best-tasting vanilla.

A wintry Saturday at Clark Park
The Seasonal Chef
Every Wednesday, Meal Ticket pokes around the food blog world to see what's simmering.
- We're getting lots of hot tips from our friends over the bridge this week. South Jersey Locavore Robin Shreeves is reminded by The Seasonal Chef that the Clark Park Farmer's Market is open year-round, with a dozen vendors supplying cheese, free-range meats and more vegetables than you would expect from the last gasp of Pennsylvania's winter.
- Food enthusiasts John and Lisa are Eating in South Jersey note that Collingswood grilled-cheese factory The Pop Shop is celebrating what would be Dr. Seuss's 105th birthday with a kid's menu that includes green eggs and ham and Who-roast-beast.
- Michael Klein at The Insider reports that the entire contents of shuttered Brasserie Perrier are up for auction, including the weighty marble-topped bar, wrought-iron artwork and chandeliers. The 40-gallon Cleaveland braising pan would make one hell of a wedding present. Auction inspection is Saturday; bidding is already open.
- Beer Lass Suzanne Woods is doing the unthinkable. She's giving up pig for Lent. What is she going to eat to soak up all the Beer Week goodies flowing next week, I ask? Don't do it, Suzanne, the Pope will never know!
- Illustrator Kris Chau enjoys the bounty of quality takeout from Nick's Charcoal Pit in South Philly. Smoked ribs and crispy onion rings keep Chau and her partner-in-eating Tim fueled for Drawing For Food.
Robin here from South Jersey Locavore. I just discovered the shout out you gave the blog here. Thank you. Now that April is here, the blog will be updated daily, Monday - Friday with South Jersey/Philadelphia info.

Jim Burke doing the plating dance at James
Andy Benson
Every Wednesday, Meal Ticket pokes around the food blog world to see what's simmering.
- Foobooz blogs photographer Andy Benson's upcoming show SEAR: Philadelphia Chefs in Motion, which debuts next Friday, March 6 at Foster's Homeware. Benson's elegant composite shots of Jim Burke (James), David Ansill (Ansill) and Gene Giuffi (Cochon), among others, provide a window into the fire and finesse of chefs in their element — their own restaurant kitchens.
- Meal Ticket's juiciest blog crush is Five Spice Duck. We flipped out over this post on Five Spice's recent trip to Korea, complete with dazzling photos of street food (strawberry iced corn dogs! carp-shaped red bean cakes! female divers and live octopus snacks!) and unpretentious recipes and stories. Bookmark now.
- MenuPages shares a dispatch from their South Florida bureau, whose writers have been traipsing around the South Beach Wine & Food Festival all week. Local entrant Rouge didn't take home any tchotckes in the Burger Bash competition, but at least they behaved themselves. The biggest news of the fest was a "crocked" Mario Batali dropping F-bombs in front of the Queen of Spain. You can take the cook out of the kitchen ...
- Philly Food Guys give two thumbs up to South Philly's For Pete's Sake, enjoying its tasteful décor and mushrooms and toast appetizer. Pete's also has one of the most solid and underrated beer lists in town — you can check it out here.
- Taylor of Mac & Cheese straightens her Sunday hat and goes for tea at the oh-so-propah Hotel Du Pont in Wilmington. Teeny sandwiches sans crusts, pots of loose leaves and a tiered dessert stand recall the gilded era when the name Du Pont conjured up images of robber baron patriarchs with side whiskers and gold-tipped walking sticks, instead of paranoid schizophrenic hermits who murdered their on-site Olympic wrestler.
Thanks for the mention! For Pete's Sake is great local. While the beer selection is good, the pub grub menu is equally tasty! Can't wait for warmer temperatures to hangout at the sidewalk tables.

Penang Curry at Cafe de Laos
Foodaphilia
Every Wednesday, Meal Ticket pokes around the food blog world to see what's simmering.
- E from Foodaphilia cheats on her longtime love, Erawan Thai Cuisine, with Cafe de Laos on Washington Ave. Though the corn cakes are found wanting, massaman curry, tom yum soup and a nubile young coconut ice cream make this a fling to revisit. Midnight booty call, perhaps?
- Lew Bryson of Seen Through a Glass pushes back at Gov. Rendell's latest revenue-producing idea: raise beer excise taxes in PA. His letter to the editor was published in the Inquirer on Feb. 17. Legislators around the country seek to raise "sin taxes" with boring predictability in times of budget crisis: Check out Oregon's proposed 1,900 percent beer tax increase.
- Local writers Tara Mataraza Desmond and Joy Manning's book Almost Meatless: Recipes That Are Better for Your Health and the Planet is doneski, and Serious Eats is giving them away! Enter to win a copy here, by telling Serious Eats all about your favorite meatless dish in the comments
- Livin' on the Vedge-er Kelly White wins for Most Cringe-Inducing Valentine's Day Post. Her exhaustively thorough recap of two vegetarians eating Mi Lah prior to getting it on turns normal words into phrases like this: "Just because it's Valentine's Day and he's mostly concentrated on what's underneath my napkin doesn't mean you can send out your mediocre specials." Kelly, come on, we don't want to think of you like that.
- Foodie at Fifteen has found 1,000 uses for harissa. Since it goes so well with eggs, peanuts and turkey sandwiches, the quest to "raise my smoke point" should be a lifelong journey.

This is one creamy vegan.
Mac & Cheese Review
Every Wednesday, Meal Ticket pokes around the food blog world to see what's simmering.
- Taylor of Mac & Cheese Review made a lucky someone coconut truffles. Substituting coconut milk for heavy cream keeps these snowy babies easy, rich and vegan. Now there are three words you don't often see applied to one subject.
- Matt Levin has found a home for his new restaurant, reports Michael Klein on The Insider. 201 Green St. will be home to Masano, a name Levin conjured from the first letters of his name and his sons' (Sam and Noah). Expect progressive cuisine at a much lower price point that what Levin was working at Lacroix.
- Joe Sixpack is pleased with the venue for Philly Beer Week's Opening Tap kickoff event, the lobby of the Comcast Center. Last year, Mayor Mike Nutter initiated the first-ever Beer Week by knocking the bung in the first cask in a gratifying spray of foam. Wonder who will wield this year's ceremonial Keg Hammer of Glory?
- UWISHUNU previews a Valentine's Day tasting of aphrodisiac foods at Foster's Homewares. Sweethearts can try out the boner-inducing properties of avocados, shrimp, exotic spices, ginger and chocolate at the City Food Tours event. If those don't work, there are plenty of bars in Old City.
- Phoodie.info rehashes a story in the Daily Pennsylvanian about UPenn pulling all peanut butter from its Ivy-covered halls. Administration is intent on keeping students safe from salmonella, even if it means the freshman have to go without Reese's Cups for breakfast
