The work week is winding down and our thoughts are drifting into happy hour territory. If you were on the fence about hitting the bar after work we're pleased to announce that tonight at 6:30 the generous people of Yuengling are planning a city-wide lager toast. So what does that mean to you? FREE BEER! And pretty much every bar in town is getting in on the action.
Why buy the whole city a round of lager? Not that free beer needs a whole lot of explanation but there are a few reasons why the brewery is buying you a beer. First off its National Drink Beer Day and secondly, Yuengling is celebrating its title of largest American owned brewery. And if you're interested in making this toast particularly memorable, Wendy Yuengling, daughter of fifth-generation brewer Dick Yuengling will be at McGillin's Olde Ale House (1310 Drury St.) drinking her namesake beer.
Meal Ticket got a first look at the swanky new Hotel Monaco set to open it doors on October 4th and with it the breathtakingly beautiful rooftop bar, Stratus. Located on the eleventh floor of the hotel, the lounge has a decidedly West Coast vibe with plenty of comfortable spots to enjoy a cocktail and take in the city views. The roof bar is pretty spectacular, the cocktails are great and you can't really argue with a views like these. Stratus is sure to become a quick Old City hotspot.
Kimpton bartenders have crafted a menu of smart cocktails including the St. James, a blend of Gin, Cocchi Americano and fino sherry and chef Guillermo Tellez has crafted a selection of small plates for snacking like sea salted caramel corn and Kennett Square mushroom sliders.
This weekend, it’s last call for Morgan’s Pier (221 N. Columbus Blvd.), which is closing up shop for the season after their Oktoberfest celebration tomorrow. Sadly, that means you’ve got just one more chance to bask by the water while brunching on crispy pulled pork patty sandwiches and watermelon rickies, but at least it sounds like we should have pretty nice weather for it.
The original Mt. Airy location of Weaver’s Way Co-op (559 Carpenter Ln.) has been undergoing major renovations, but it’s finally ribbon-cutting time. This Saturday they’re having a grand-reopening party to celebrate their new look. From noon to 4 p.m., there will be cake and free samples on hand, appearances by local pols, live music, a drawing for a $100 gift card to the shop—and for members, it’s the first of three customer appreciation days that will net you an additional 5% off your tab.
Oh, and if your weekend travels happen to take you by a Krispy Kreme (such as the one at 41 S. 16th St.), be aware that they’ll totally just hand you a free cup of coffee if you stumble in on Saturday, which is apparently National Coffee Day. That’s a bank holiday, right? Who cares! Free something!
Get ready, Rittenhouse, the new location of South Philly donut and fried chicken-ery Federal Donuts is opening up shop next Wednesday. The 1623 Sansom Street spot let the new menu leak and we've got to say we're more than a little excited to try the new offerings. Fancy donuts are coming in flavors like mint chocolate cookie, lemon bar, maple bacon, green tea-sesame (!!) spicy pb&J and butter pecan. Hot fresh donuts from the new donut robot are being fried up with Turkish mocha, strawberry fennel and vanilla spice.
And on the chicken front we've got options of birds available in halves, wholes and wings with your choice of passion fruit teriyaki or dill pickle glazes or cowboy coffee, shabazzi or Federal blend seasoning.
The new location is advertising the hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. or until sell-out but were thinking that more realistically the Federal folks are going be able to close up shop way earlier than that due to the high demand for awesome fried chicken and donuts in Center City.
Beginning tonight at 5 p.m. the 11th Street space that was once Boilermaker (216 S. 11th St.) is transforming itself into a new concept from the folks at the Grainery Group, The Butcher and Brewer.
The new idea isn't all that far off from Boilermaker with 40 local taps, high end versions of the city-wide special, 20 wines by the glass and cocktails all happening behind the bar. The big changes are happening in the kitchen with chef Jenny Choplin formerly of Watkins Drinkery. This self dubbed "meatery" will be focusing on local nose-to-tail dining, charcuterie and cheeses. The kitchen will be serving the full menu from 5 p.m. until midnight daily and charcuterie will be available until 1:30 a.m.
Norris Square Neighborhood Project’s Community Garden, Las Parcelas Garden (2241 N. 2nd St.), will host the next Philly Stake meal this Sunday, Sept. 30th from 4-7:00 p.m. Stake dinners get the community together to sit down to a great meal made from locally-sourced ingredients (from Greensgrow Farms) while listening to proposals for community projects. Everyone votes on which project they deem most worthy, and the winners take home the profits from the meal to kickstart their idea. Fourteen of these dinners have taken place so far, resulting in $10,000 of grants going right to our neighbors who have great ideas.
Up for your consideration this time around are several local arts projects, a therapeutic community garden for the elderly, and even an outdoor pizza oven for PhillyEarth’s youth-run urban farm. Pre-sale tickets are already sold out, but they’ve held back 50 tickets to sell at the door for anyone who missed buying online. (Tickets to the meal are $10-20, on a sliding scale.) Learn more and read all the proposals right here!
If you have a passion for ice cream, hot dogs, beer and arm wrestling you'll be more than pleased to know that on October 6th The Dapper Dog, Yards and Little Baby's Ice Cream are coming together for Grip Up. So, why bring beer, dogs, scoops and hand-to-hand combat together? Well, here's the back story from the folks at Little Baby's:
The Individuals behind The Dapper Dog and Little Baby’s Ice Cream were drinking Yards’ Brawler Pugilist Style Ale one day and a debate broke out…
“Hot Dog Eaters are the best Arm Wrestlers,” said The Dapper Dog.
“No I must disagree, Ice Cream Eaters are the best Arm Wrestlers,” said Little Baby’s Ice Cream.
“A Competition we must have!” said the bottle of Yards Brawler Ale.
So a Fall Brawl we’re having! Put your favorite Champion Hoodie on! Turn your hat backwards!
If you'd like to try your hand at this awesome arm wrestling competition the action is happening from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Garden Variety on 2nd and Poplar. All you have to do is send your pertinent weight class info to Dapper Dogs, cough up $20 (proceeds go to the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and flex your arm wrestling muscles. Winners can expect prizes in the form of beer (Yards Brawler, obviously), gift certificates to The Foodery and Rustica Pizza and losers will be treated to complimentary scoops of Little Baby's Brown Butter Brawler ice cream. If you'd prefer to sit back and spectate, admission is free and there will be a post-competition screening of Over the Top.
Food carts and trucks are wheeling in for this weekend's first ever Manayunk StrEats fest. On Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Main Street will be lined with favorites like Little Baby's Ice Cream, The Dapper Dog, Sweet Box Cupcakes and Kung Fu Hoagies. You'll be able to shop farmers' market style with goods from Philly Cow Share, Spring Mountain Farms and the Manayunk Roxborough co-op.
And since StrEats is the kick off for Manayunk restaurant week, local eateries are opening their doors for tours and discounted apple-themed app and cocktails. Laxmi's Indian Grill is serving apple-cinnamon naan, Chabaa Thai Bistro is doing curry puffs with an apple cucumber salad and Gemelli on Main is is shaking up apple sidecars.
Take a look at the full line up of vendors right here.
We've been waiting until the five o'clock hour to pass to fill you in on some serious happy hour action. Amada (217-219 Chestnut St.) and Chifa (707 Chestnut St.), two Garces OGs have recently rolled out some stellar happy hour offerings.
On weekdays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. there are drink specials that include local and Peruvian brews and chile-spiked cocktails at Chifa and red and white sangria and Spanish-accented drinks at Amada all under the $5 mark. And then there are the snacks: think pork belly buns and pupu platters at Chifa and tapas style gambas as ajillo, tortilla and croquetas de jamon at Amada. And yes, all plates are being served for less than five bucks.
Being that Amada and Chifa are only a few short blocks away from one another organizing a happy hour crawl is a pretty appealing possibility.
While there are some folks who relish strolling the aisles of the supermarket, grocery shopping is not everyone's preferred pass time. For those who would prefer not to while away time in the check out line, FreshDirect is coming to help with all of your grocery needs.
This New York based home delivery service allows you to shop through their website, choose all of your groceries and delivers them to your doorstep or your fourth floor walk up for a negligible fee. Car-less city dwellers thrive on this kind of stuff in NYC where having to decide between a can of beans or a carton of orange juice matters 'cause you're walking everything home.
Beginning on Monday, October 1st, FreshDirect will be delivering to eight zip codes around town with Whole Food-sy offerings like Fage Greek yogurt, Lancaster county milk along with locally raised and butchered meats and produce. Taking the human interaction out of the shopping equation is a little weird, but you can't really argue with the convenience factor.
