40 years after Roe v. Wade, abortion-rights battle rages on

POSTED: Tuesday, January 22, 2013, 9:37 AM

Today, at Broad and Walnut, reproductive-rights advocates will be rallying for a noontime "visibility event," one of many being held throughout the state. As noted in the current issue of City Paper, the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision that decriminalized abortion, Roe v. Wade, doesn't bring much cause for celebration — or, as Time Magazine put it, abortion-rights activists have "been losing ever since."

With Mitt Romney's presidential loss, many of his supporters' hopes that the abortion question would be sent back to the states to decide is still likely to be fulfilled: Witness the dozens of restrictive laws being passed by state legislatures nationwide. (At Philly's Romney HQ in October, one phone-banker shared with me her fond memories of college fundraiser to send a friend to a different state for an abortion, as an example of how well this type of state-by-state system can work.) Pennsylvania plays a pivotal roll in this still-unfurling legacy — as one of the most restrictive states when it comes to abortion access, and as the battleground for state-level restrictions, which spawned the Supreme Court case Casey v. Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania and ultimately cleared the way for the glut of new state laws now being introduced.

If you can't make it at lunchtime today, another event is being held Thursday. This one's a fundraiser for Women's Medical Fund, which helps poor women cover abortion expenses. David S. Cohen, Associate Professor of Law at Drexel University's Earle Mack School of Law, and Krysten Connon will present their research on the harassment of abortion providers, based on interviews with 85 abortion providers around the country.
