Blogger: "David Lipson tried to get me fired"

POSTED: Friday, June 8, 2012, 5:52 PM

It’s a common critique of all regional magazines: that editorial space is pay to play. And Philadelphia Magazine gets accused of it as much as the next publication.

Laura Goldman, a local blogger and freelance writer who contributes to Metro and Philly Weekly, feels that the level of pandering she perceives at Philadelphia Magazine makes it an absurd venue to host any type of media critique. In particular, she points out that Philly Mag lets shooter Hugh E. Dillon photograph whatever events he likes, usually events run by his own paying clients. She claims that Best in Philly is advertiser-driven, and that she hears complaints from Philly Mag employees about the lack of a church-state divide. So, she argues, running an article like Jason Fagone’s recent feature on CP, Philly Weekly and the two alt-weeklies’ business models, was way out of line. She posted those claims on her personal blog, and sent the link to MetroCorp president David Lipson.

Goldman quickly heard back. In fact, Lipson cc’ed one of Goldman’s freelance employers, Metro US publisher Yggers Mortensen. “We can dish it out and can certainly take what comes,” he wrote. “You should consider the background of your writers before unleashing them.” The email contained a link to a New York Post Page Six story from 2010 that labels Goldman a stalker and a “Fatal Attraction” type; it’s a deeply unflattering article that calls into question her mental health and credibility. Goldman calls the story a record of her “ill-advised attempts to get justice from my rapist.”

Goldman says Lipson is trying to get her fired. Lipson, reached by CP, said he realizes now the email was a mistake. “I did that against my better judgment,” he said. “I feel bad for this person. Her blog was ridiculous and silly, and that’s why I sent that response.”

He thinks that Goldman is “just trying to make a name for herself.” And, he says that Philly Mag has never been pay to play, and that quick scan of the Best of Philly list and the list of advertisers reveals no correlation. He adds, “To say we’ve lost our integrity because of our party picture guy? That’s absurd.”

Well, Lipson makes good points. But as Goldman writes, his choice to “smear” her, “a small-time blogger,” does raise questions – even if he did it only out of momentary annoyance.
