Broad Street Run switches to lottery registration

POSTED: Thursday, November 1, 2012, 12:07 PM

Afer registration mayhem the past year or two for the increasingly popular Broad Street Run, the 10-mile race is going to a registration lottery, following the template of major marathons around the country. For those who don't want to chance it for the May 5, 2013 race —and, along the way, want to do good in the city — charitable registrations are open early, benefiting Back on My Feet Philadelphia, which helps homeless people to become self-sufficient through running. Charity registration opens today. Press release after the jump.

PHILADELPHIA, PA (November 1, 2012) – Demonstrating its continued support of Back on My Feet Philadelphia, organizers of the Blue Cross Broad Street Run have opened up advanced registration for its 2013 event to individuals running to raise money for the charity. In its four-year history, the partnership has raised nearly $300,000 for Back on My Feet Philadelphia, and nearly $100,000 in 2012 alone.

Broad Street Run race organizers have granted runners an opportunity to secure early registration via the Back on My Feet Philadelphia website, well before a general race lottery in February 2013. Beginning on Thursday, November 1 at 11:00 am, Back on My Feet Philadelphia website will offer a limited number of charity registrations, allowing an extended period of time to raise funds to support Back on My Feet’s mission to promote the self-sufficiency of those experiencing homelessness by using running as a means to build confidence, strength, and self-esteem.

“The Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Department and the Blue Cross Broad Street Run race committee are proud to support the great work Back on My Feet is doing in Philadelphia to not only help those who are homeless become self-sufficient, but to improve their health and well-being in the process,” said Race Director Jim Marino. “We are excited about kick-starting Back on My Feet Philadelphia’s fundraising program with guaranteed entries into the 2013 Blue Cross Broad Street Run and are hopeful that many runners will take advantage of this limited-time opportunity. The entries are guaranteed and will eliminate the uncertainty of being selected in the general lottery.”

The Blue Cross Broad Street Run, the nation’s largest 10-mile race, has experienced record sellout turnout in recent years. For the first time in its history, the race will conduct a lottery during a two-week period in February that will determine participants for the Sunday, May 5, 2013 event.

“Due to such a large demand for entry, the only fair way to give everyone an equal chance will be through a computer-generated lottery selection,” said Marino. “The exact timing and format is still in development, however, consideration will be given to the veteran runners who helped to build this great event and for those who continue to support key charities such as Back on My Feet Philadelphia.”

Additional lottery details will be available through the race website, Broadstreetrun.com, in the coming weeks.

“The Blue Cross Broad Street Run, the City of Philadelphia, and Back on My Feet Philadelphia have a shared commitment to ending homelessness in our city and encouraging a healthy, active lifestyle,” said Jill Fink, Executive Director of Back on My Feet Philadelphia.  “We cannot thank race organizers enough for their continued support of our efforts to use running as a vehicle for promoting self-sufficiency among those experiencing homelessness.”
