Damon Roberts campaign reports more threats

POSTED: Thursday, April 5, 2012, 5:28 PM

Guess things are getting ugly in the race for the 186th District seat in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Candidate Damon K. Roberts reports "this morning, Thursday, a man attempted to break in to the campaign office. The same female campaign worker was alone in the office when this happened and immediately contacted the Philadelphia Police, who responded quickly and arrested the man on the spot. The two incidents seem to be unrelated." Full press release follows.

Vandalism Brings Strength and Confidence, Not Fear, to the Damon K. Roberts Campaign.

Philadelphia, April 5th, 2012:Word to local newspapers and stations spread quickly after Damon K. Roberts' office was vandalized earlier this week. A campaign worker found blood-red paint splattered across the campaign headquarters' sign along with a malicious, racially-driven note when she entered the office Tuesday morning.

The note was handwritten and said “WE OUT FOR BLOOD N****!!!” Roberts, like his two opponents, is African American. “It is sad to see that to this day we see so much hatred in the world. If I am elected, I hope to promote equal rights, respect and justice for all citizens,” said Roberts.

The incident was reported to police and detectives are on the case reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses. “Philadelphia politics can sometimes get out of hand. I imagine that this was designed to distract us, but it only makes us more determined and focused. They may be “out for blood,” but I am out to improve our community and clean up our streets. In my opinion, my focus will better impact our friends, families and neighbors than whoever was up to this,” Roberts said.

Closely following Tuesday's incident, this morning, Thursday, a man attempted to break in to the campaign office. The same female campaign worker was alone in the office when this happened and immediately contacted the Philadelphia Police, who responded quickly and arrested the man on the spot. The two incidents seem to be unrelated.

This is not the first threat that Damon K. Roberts and his campaign staff has experienced. Last month, a supporter of Jordan Harris, Roberts' primary opponent, entered Roberts' Broad Street campaign office to confront the candidate. The man said in an aggressive and threatening tone, “I'm not into these politics, I'm from the streets and we handle things the way men from the street handle things.” The very next night, a different Jordan Harris supporter came into the office and threatened the candidate in a similar manner. That night, Roberts was alone in his campaign office. “I don't understand why Harris' supporters think that threats of physical violence will shed a good light. I would never condone such behavior because of two things, firstly because I do not believe in physical violence and want to work on curbing violence in our neighborhoods, and secondly because I do not believe that voters would approve of having an individual representing them in the State House that allows his supporters to behave in such a manner,” commented Roberts.

Damon K. Roberts stated,

“Unfortunately, bad things happen, but we can prove our worth only by overcoming adversity, which I have spent much of my life doing. Tuesday's incident did not put any pressure on us, and it does not make us fearful, as I am sure was intended. We are strong and focused, and these events only make me more determined to win the election so that I can clean up our streets and make south and southwest Philadelphia the best neighborhood that it could possibly be.”

Campaign Manager Travis Salters added, “The sad reality is that Philadelphia politics are not going to change, and so the best thing for us to do is to ignore the negative outside voices that are trying to get in our head. Damon is too strong and too smart to let something like this affect his campaign efforts.” With the April 24th election just weeks away, determination and focus are two requirements for Roberts and his campaign crew. Roberts is confident that his perseverance, in addition to the determination and focus of the campaign crew, will cinch him the upcoming election.
