Democrat backed by anti-abortion rich people sends pro-choice mailer decrying GOP "war on women"

Dick and Betsy DeVos, the right-wing Amway heirs behind millions of dollars of pro-voucher campaign donations, are funding a militantly pro-choice mailer sent out in support of Fatimah Muhammad's campaign against lead voucher opponent and state Rep. Jim Roebuck in West Philadelphia's 188th district.

Democrat backed by anti-abortion rich people sends pro-choice mailer decrying GOP “war on women”

Things are getting even weirder than normal in Philadelphia politics: conservative hedge-fund managers and corporate heirs are, as we've reported (here and here), spending big to support pro-school-voucher candidates and attack opponents.

This week things just took a turn for the straight-up outer-space bizarre: Dick and Betsy DeVos, the right-wing Amway heirs behind millions of dollars of pro-voucher campaign donations, are funding what appears to be a purpose-made front of a PAC, which in turn is behind a militantly pro-choice mailer sent out in support of Fatimah Muhammad's campaign against lead voucher opponent and state Rep. Jim Roebuck in West Philadelphia's 188th district.

The DeVos family, again, is pretty right-wing―and they have also donated big-time to anti-abortion organizations.

The “pro-choice” mailer attacks Gov. Tom Corbett for saying that women forced to undergo a mandatory transvaginal ultrasound before receiving an abortion would “just have to close [their] eyes.” The other side of the mailer says that “Republicans are waging a war on women's rights” and that Muhammad will “take on Republican extremists and protect our rights.”

This is politics at its most cynical: major funders of the pro-choice, pro-Muhammad ad are anti-abortion Republican extremists.

Women for Change, a shell of a PAC registered in Elkins Park, has received $10,000 from the pro-voucher Students First PAC, which has in turn received at least $2.42 million from the DeVos-controlled American Federation for Children since 2011.

Muhammad has received $25,000 from Students First, and appears to have close ties to those associated with powerful pro-voucher state Sen. Anthony Williams' political machine. Students First also donated $12,000 to the third-party Public Education Excellence, which has now mailed out three glossy, misleading ads attacking Roebuck.

In 2012, Students First has donated tens of thousands more to mysterious PACs with names like Make a Difference PAC, For a Better Pennsylvania Fund, the Grass Roots Urban Political Alliance, Citizens Networking for Progress, Progressive Agenda PAC, and Economic Development PAC. They have also given $350,000 to the statewide pro-voucher Citizens Alliance PAC and $6,000 to the Black Clergy of Philadelphia PAC.

Muhammad also sent out three more positive mailers over the past week, touting a “LiveWellExpo” this afternoon and a “Fatimah's Festival” this Saturday. Face painting and double dutch included. No word on a bouncy castle.

This is insane. She's the biggest hypocrite of them all. It's apparent that she'll take money from whoever will give it to her. She's being backed by pro-voucher and anti-choice groups, yet her people want to paint that picture that she's a young, smart progressive woman? For someone who's never been an elected official, it seems like she's just as dirty of a politician as the ones already in place. Everything is for sale to the highest bidder. My vote is going to Roebuck.

This is why you can't trust Democrats, and have to start looking at real progressives like Greens.
