Josephs-Sims campaign keeps on coming
Brian Sims, the former campaign treasurer for longtime Center City Rep. Babette Josephs and her challenger in the 182nd Pennsylvania House District, has out-fundraised her three-to-one, as noted in today's Daily News. Ostensibly, that's the inspiration for Josephs' latest attempt to show up Sims on the campaign trail: a low-budget online campaign video that reads like a Babette dream sequence set to a klezmer-esque soundtrack. Josephs mentions her lack of wealthy "out-of-state" donors, then takes us on a whirlwind tour of her district. It's goofy, mostly beside the point, kind of endearing and worth a watch if you have a couple minutes. Pair this with the trippy, Lost in Space-themed campaign mailers we blogged about a few days ago, and Josephs definitely wins the prize for quirkiest campaign this election cycle.
Also, Josephs' campaign has a release out in response to our reporting on the recent campaign negativity. It's below. The gist is, essentially, "Sims started it." Read on for the full statement.
To reporters and interested parties,
A few web news sources have reported that the race between Babette Josephs and Brian Sims has gone negative, and have cited our campaign's science fiction themed mailer. They are right. This race has gone negative, and we sent out a negative piece.
But this campaign went negative a long time ago.
It went negative when on Feb. 15, when Mr. Sims issued a press release attacking Babette and misquoting her twice. You can find it on his website. It went negative again on March 8 at Liberty City Democratic Club's meeting, when Mr. Sims promised the audience he would not go negative and then used video from that very event to attack Babette. It went negative yet again a few weeks ago, when Mr. Sims sent out a negative mailer attacking Babette's jobs record, even though the 182nd has more jobs than just about any other district in the state.
Mr. Sims can dish out the attachs, but when it comes to taking some lighthearted criticism, it seems he's got a glass jaw.
Let's take yesterday's absurd press release. Mr. Sims tries to tie Babette to a Harrisburg scandal she had nothing to do with because the things she says are consistent. According to the press release, saying one thing on a campaign and saying the same thing as an elected official is an ethics violation. If Mr. Sims is such a stickler for the rules, why hasn't he called for convicted Rep. Bill DeWeese to resign as Babette did on Feb. 8? Is that another person with whom he plans to compromise?
The release goes on to accuse Babette of getting money from PACs. Indeed Babette is proud to have received contributions from progressive PACs such as Planned Parenthood and National Organization for Women. Mr. Sims' campaign is conspicuously unspecific about which PACs he finds so evil.
Our mailer was fair. It was not personal and it was not distortive. Everywhere he goes, Mr. Sims says that if elected he will meet with Republicans and talk them into compromising. Implicit in Mr. Sims' campaign speeches is that he will give ground on some of his own principles. He told an audience at Philly for Change on March 7 that if elected, he will schedule meetings with every Representative in Harrisburg and that if they only see his face, they will surely change their minds about same sex marriage.
This kind of naiveté is dangerous for Philadelphia. And Mr. Sims' dishonesty is sad.
Babette will never back down from Tom Corbett and the other bullies in Harrisburg. She will continue to fight for our neighborhoods and our rights. She will continue to call out Republicans when they try to suppress the votes of minorities, eviscerate public education and regulate abortion out of existence.
The people of the 182nd District want a Representative who will fight for our values. That's why they've re-elected Babette over and over again.
Thanks for your time,
