Not a joke: Corbett tells colleges to ease cuts to budget by drilling for gas on campus
We were sure this was a joke. It is not. Gov. Tom Corbett has suggested universities suffering massive cuts to their budgets (cuts made, that is, by Corbett) should consider just, well, leasing their land out for Marcellus Shale gas drilling!

Gov. Tom Corbett has suggested universities suffering massive cuts to their budgets (cuts made, that is, by Corbett) should consider just, well, leasing their land out for Marcellus Shale gas drilling!
Reports the Erie Times-News' Sean McCracken:
Gov. Tom Corbett told the Pennsylvania Association of Councils of Trustees that the state's universities could ease their financial woes by tapping into Marcellus shale deposits beneath their campuses.
Speaking at Edinboro University during his first visit to northwestern Pennsylvania since taking office, Corbett said six campuses in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education sit on the Marcellus shale formations now being tapped for natural gas.
Corbett, whose proposed 2011-12 budget includes $2 billion in cuts to education and a 50 percent reduction in aid to colleges and universities, also emphasized that those cuts are only proposals.
We first heard about the remarks via a press release by the often surprisingly-snarky Pennsylvania Democratic Party Press Office, which added that "this ridiculous plan again shows that no matter what the issue, the profits and best interests of his largest benefactors are never far from Tom Corbett's mind."
Corbett, of course, has also called for reduced environmental regulation on Marcellus Shale drilling — a decision higlighted by the recent explosion of a gas well in Bradford county, spewing thousands of gallons of toxic fluids into a nearby stream.
And boy would we like to be on campus for that party.

Really, really sick.— PSomething- The governor's slime factor is growing by the statement. Absolutely infuriating to think of the carte blanche policy enabling the gas people to destroy lands, towns roads and water supplies and yet, pay no tax. Name any other profit driven organization who receives such exclusive royal treatment. Why? Very simple, they give the governor more money for elections than any one else. In common terms that's referred to as 'bribing' or 'graft'. In reality it's an excellent example of how opportunists like corbett get so rich in office. Until the masses take an interest in learning facts about candidates we'll continue to have frauds like corbett in office. Of course these snake oil salesmen count on the ignorance of the masses and exploit it for their $$ gain. Sadly, these charlatans prevail in both parties. The education budget is hacked while in reality it should be expanded.....especially in matters of federal, state and local governments. All citizens should be compelled to actually learn what's going on under their clueless noses. No wonder corbett, et al, find education cuts so convenient. The dumber and more ill informed the citizens, the better for those in charge of the treasury. All part of the slime factor.— stoneman
