Occupy Day of Action for Migrants this Sunday

POSTED: Friday, December 16, 2011, 4:08 PM

Technically, immigrants and people of all races are allowed in the Constitution Center. But the organizers of a march for migrant rights won't let that stop them this Sunday, during a modified Posada that's part of an international day of action on migrants' rights and race issues. Borrowing the tradition of the Mexican parade that re-enacts the plight of Mary and Joseph searching for and being denied shelter, the New Sanctuary Movement and Occupy Philly procession "will stop at Congressional offices, the Constitution Center and US Citizen and Immigration Services, each time being refused welcome." The whole thing will be capped off with a potluck unity celebration at Arch Street Methodist Church.

In the scattered spirit of Occupy, there are a couple different press releases on this. Various of them below.

----

New Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia and Occupy Philadelphia:

On Sunday, December 18th, people from every continent will be standing up and speaking out for the rights of migrants and against racism. Here in Philadelphia, members of a Latino congregation in N. Philly ...came up with the idea of holding a Posada to call for the end of deportations and an end to the separation of families. This will be a prayerful procession through Center City.

Las Posadas (Spanish for "the inn") is a traditional Mexican festival which re-enacts Mary and Joseph's travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem and their search for room at the inn. A processional stops at a previously selected home and asks for lodging for the night. After being turned away twice, the people are then invited in to read scriptures, eat, and sing carols called villancicos.

Join us in this rich tradition to reflect on what hospitality means, call on decision makers to open this nation's doors and hearts, and to imagine the society we want to live in. We will meet at the Federal Building and proceed to The Constitution Center, Immigration Offices and then to City Hall. We will end with a celebration at Arch St United Methodist Church (Broad/Arch St).

-Potluck at Arch St United Methodist Church.
-Join us after the Posada for a unity celebration.
-We ask those willing, to bring:
*Desserts, Snacks, Refreshments
*Plates, Napkins, Cups, and Utensils

- Please bring these donations to Arch Street United Methodist Church at 2:30 pm.

Following this event Occupy Philly invites everyone to Occupy Philly Open Mic at District 1199C-the National Union of Hospital and Healthcare Employees union hall (1319 Locust Street between 13th ST and Broad Street) from 5:30-7pm.

All are welcome!

Global Day of Action for the Rights of Migrants and Against Racism
Comes to Philly!

Philadelphia, Sunday 18th -  People from all over the world will be holding actions for the Global Day of Action for the Rights of Migrants and Against Racism.  In Philadelphia, New Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia and OccupyPhilly will hold a Posada, a traditional Mexican festival which re-enacts Mary and Joseph's travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem and their search for room at the inn.  A prayerful procession through Center City will highlight the ways elected officials and enforcement policies have closed the doors of this nation to families. The Posada will stop at Congressional offices, the Constitution Center and US Citizen and Immigration Services, each time being refused welcome.

Concepción, a member of Visitation BVM parish and a leader with New Sanctuary Movement, said: “This day is very important because families are suffering today the same way Mary and Joseph suffered, and the lack of action by our representatives is closing the door on people who come here to find a better life and support their family.  In this time of celebrations, many families are suffering because they have been separated by unjust immigration policies.”

Who: New Sanctuary Movement and Occupy Philly
What:  Posada – a prayerful procession in Center City – for the Rights of Migrants
When: December 18th, 3pm-5pm
Where: Meet at Federal Building on 6th and Market, continue to 9th and Market and end at Arch St UMC at Arch and Broad

On December 18, 1990 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. Ten years later the U.N. declared December 18 as International Migrants Day. The Convention emphasizes that the rights of migrants are not to be violated or attacked regardless of the immigration status in the country of residence

United Nations data indicates that 175 million people worldwide are immigrants. Yet, in spite of the many contributions of immigrants to the countries they decided to adopt as their homes, many times they are mistreated, victimized, discriminated and exploited.  In the US, Congress has failed to pass any Comprehensive Reform or the DREAM Act, and yet the Administration continues to escalate enforcement, deporting over 1 million people in the last three years.
