Occupy Philadelphia still standing — though likely not for long

Despite warnings from the city — not to mention its own various internal difficulties — Occupy Philly is still standing this morning, after supporters, clergy and even a small contingent of New York Occupiers flooded Dilworth Plaza last night to wait for the city's next move.

That next move is undoubtedly coming. Just this morning, Mayor Michael Nutter's press office sent out a media advisory about media parking logistics during construction on Dilworth Plaza, the ostensible reason Occupy has been ordered to leave the site. Presumably, that construction is going to start soon.

On Friday, the city gave Occupy 48 hours' notice to leave. It also announced that it had granted a permit to protest across the street, on Thomas Paine Plaza — but the permit wasn't for Occupy Philly.

While Occupy Philly did apply for such a permit, the city instead granted the request of another group, Reasonable Solutions, which began as a splinter group of Occupy Philly. Occupy maintains it has nothing to do with them. So apparently enthralled with this other group was Nutter, however, that he also announced that he was looking into securing office space for Reasonable Solutions.

Meanwhile, it's looking like endgame for Occupy Philly — not that everyone thinks that's such a bad thing. While the group remains publicly defiant of the city's orders to leave, individual members have been acknowledging privately to City Paper that maintaining the encampment has become increasingly difficult, especially as the number of homeless individuals present in the camp has grown steadily.

Will eviction mean the absolute end of Occupy Philly? Not according to the occupiers: They're already talking about what comes next — Occupy 2.0, as some have called the uncertain future.

The Reasonable Solutions Working Group is very much a part of Occupy Philly who are committed to supporting and standing in solidarity with Occupy Wall St. and other Occupy sites around the US and World. - In the words of the immortal Chuck D. - "Don't Believe The Hype".
