Occupy Philly marches to Liberty Bell, Independence Hall: Declares independence from Wall Street and Corporate America

More than 2,000 people, from bed-headed young people who had slept the night at City Hall to union workers and families, marched past the Liberty Bell to Independence Hall to support Occupy Philly’s call for economic justice.

“We are the hardworking people,” said Jennifer Martinez, a Certified Nursing Assistant from North Philadelphia and member of SEIU Local 1199-P, whose members sported purple t-shirts reading Stop corporate greed. “It took us too long. I think we’re sending a message not just to the Tea Party, but to the world, that we’re taking America back.”

Occupy Philly took over Dilworth Plaza in front of City Hall on Thursday morning. Occupations have sprouted up in cities nation-wide in solidarity with the mass Occupy Wall Street protests that have transformed the national conversation and offer the first serious progressive response to the Tea Party since the recession began in 2007. Today marked Occupy Philly's largest demonstration yet, and labor unions and other activists continue to discuss how to work together over coming weeks.

Protesters chanted what are now Occupy-fill-in-the-blank classics: “Banks got bailed out, we got sold out;” and “We are the 99 percent.”

Signs ranged from, “I’ll believe that corporations are people when Texas executes one” to the wry old standby “Eat the Rich.”

As the march proceeded down Market Street, many onlookers in this largely working class and union town seemed to appreciate the change in political tune.

“Wall Street is getting richer, but they need to create jobs and stop the war,” said a woman from Mt. Airy, who stood clapping near a large Indian wedding party that was also shouting words of encouragement.

Barbara Schraeder, who lives in Center City, stood cheering on the sidewalk.

“I’m with them. Something has to be done. I just hope their anger is in the right direction-- at the banks.”
