Redistricting bill passes PA House, and the ridiculing begins

POSTED: Tuesday, December 20, 2011, 2:30 PM

Despite impassioned speeches from Pennsylvania representatives who complained that they sometimes had to drive through two or three Congressional districts just to get from home to the office, the Pennsylvania House has passed a measure to redraw the state's districts in an — if possible — even more circuitous manner. The various political machinations (and the machinations behind the machinations) behind this afternoon's successful 131-36 vote aside, it now goes to Gov. Tom Corbett for his signature.

Republicans stressed that the redistricting plan passed all legal litmus tests (though, of course, there are many ways to do that, as this open-source DIY redistricting program demonstrates).

But apparently, sometimes, when you're being disenfranchised, all you can do is laugh. The Washington Post is even running a name-that-district contest for our beleaguered 7th District, which apparently is shaped rather like a "laughing man who kicks a nun," according to one entrant.
