[Correction from Mayor Nutter's office at bottom of post]

If it seems as though all of the Occupy Wall Street evictions are taking place at the same time — Oakland, Portland and now the New York City mothership — that's because they are. And if you think the crackdown might be secretly coordinated by big city mayors around the country, as many protesters contend, you might be right, too.

Oakland Mayor Jean Quan told the BBC that she had participated in a conference call with 18 city leaders discussing how to break up Occupy camps, (thanks to Gregg Levine, a contributing editor at the liberal blog Firedoglake, for the tip).

“I was recently on a conference call with 18 cities across the country who had the same situation, where what had started as a political movement, a political encampment, ended up being an encampment that was no longer in control of the people who started them," Quan said.

The New York City eviction and reports of inter-city coordination could heighten tensions between protesters and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, who on Sunday forcefully insisted that hundreds of protesters move ahead of planned construction work at Dilworth Plaza. The wave of evictions elsewhere might buoy Nutter’s resolve, but it will also likely increase protesters' suspicion of the mayor — who, as many note, waited until after Election Day to make his statement.

Mark McDonald, the mayor’s press secretary, told City Paper that no Philadelphia official has been involved in such calls.

But it’s also worth noting that Mayor Quan’s language, describing a movement hijacked by radicals, echoes Mayor Nutter’s speech this Sunday: “The people of Occupy Philly have also changed and their intentions have changed [...] We’ve seen the rise of new groups as a part of this movement like the Radical Caucus, which is bent on civil disobedience and disrupting city operations.”

**

CORRECTION:

McDonald did correct an earlier statement to City Paper in which he denied that Mayor Nutter had communicated with other mayors, including Oakland Mayor Jean Quan, about Occupy protests.

“On Sunday, the Mayor was asked at the press conference about whether there was some kind of coordinated thing going on. He pointed out that he is the Vice Chairman of the U.S. Conference of Mayors: he talks with mayors and groups of mayors all the time. They do that on a regular basis. And surely the subject of the Occupy phenomena has come up, and they compare notes. And apparently, on one of these recent calls, toward the end, someone came onto one of these calls and identified herself as Jean Quan. I did not know that, so I’m correcting that for the record.”

“What there is not,” he continued,” and the Mayor is not part of, is a coordinated effort on the part of cities to deal with Occupy protesters.”

McDonald says that the city is currently meeting with representatives of a group called the Reasonable Solutions Committee, which seeks to avoid conflict with the city.

“And if the main Occupy folks want to have a meeting,” says McDonald, “we certainly will. We’ve been trying to have a meeting for sometime now.”

Occupy Philly passed a resolution at Sunday’s General Assembly directing Legal Working Group members to do just that.
