URBAN PLANNER: Weekend in the city

POSTED: Friday, October 14, 2011, 3:01 PM

In case you need a break from logging long hours at Occupy Philly, here's what else is going on this weekend.

OCT. 14. State of Young Philly wraps up tonight with a presentation of findings from two weeks of panel discussions and other events. Young Involved Philadelphia brings in speakers including Mayor Nutter,
Jamira Burley of the National Peace Alliance and State Rep. Kevin Boyle. A reception follows.

OCT. 14-23. Learn about streetscape design, traffic calming and local businesses at Better Blocks Philly, a week-long series of events that include an opening party tonight from 6-9 p.m. at 1701 Christian St., Blocktoberfest tomorrow, street mural painting on Sunday, and speakers and art-making through the week.

OCT. 14-16. Take the smartest people in the city, put them in the same room for a weekend, and watch extraordinary things emerge. That's the idea behind Startup Weekend, meant to develop web or mobile apps. It runs all weekend at Drexel.

OCT. 15. Marking the 10-year anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, Philly Against War is holding a rally, cultural fair and, for reasons yet to be explained, a yoga and tai chi session at Independence Mall. Happenings begin at 11 a.m. There will also be a march to City Hall in support of, you guessed, Occupy Philly.

OCT. 15-16. Mutual UFO Network is holding a two-day conference loaded with "scientific" speakers at the Sheraton Four Points on Roosevelt Boulevard. Learn about sightings and how to authenticate them.
