*Video* Council candidate Dan Savage sings the virtues of John Street, Maria Quinones-Sanchez rebutts attacks on her legacy, and more from last night's 7th Council District debate

True, Philly Clout beat us to reporting a strange moment in last night's 7th City Council District debate between incumbent Councilwoman Maria Quinones-Sanchez and challenger Dan Savage, a ward leader who briefly occupied the Council seat after former Councilman Rick Mariano went to jail for bribery.

But ElectionEar got it on video.

While answering a question about crime and drugs in the district — a major problem — Savage began to sing the praises of former mayor John Street, while appearing to blame present crime on "a relationship between [Sanchez] and the current mayor," who he says has presided over a "weaker" anti-drug policy.

"Under Mayor Street, those people were put in jail" said Savage to some applause, mostly from black audience members supporting him.

The 7th District is incredibly diverse, and Councilwoman Sanchez is popular among Hispanic voters but appears to have more opposition from black and white voters. It's a safe bet that Savage knew his remarks on John Street would appeal to black residents.

Then, Daily News editor Gar Joseph asked the audience whether they would vote for John Street for Councilman At-Large, a position which he could run for, having recently declared himself an Independent. While this drew some boisterous applause, I think the Daily News is a bit off when they describe "a hearty round of applause" from the audience. I noted a hearty cheer from a small portion of the audience. The older white folks near me, among others, remained noticeably silent.

In the second video, Savage and Sanchez debate small business policy — in particular, a bill introduced by Councilwoman Sanchez and Councilman Bill Green that would have shifted the Business Privilege Tax  burden from net income, which out-of-city businesses don't have to pay, to "gross receipts" or total sales — which they do. The bill would have exempted the first $100,000 of gross receipts as well and would have completed eliminated business taxes for at least 30,000 businesses according to figures from the administration, which opposed it. The bill did not pass committee.

I thought Danny Savage did a great job last night at the debate. He did extremely well considering it was an obvious set-up once things got started, besides being in Sanchez's backyard. Why not pick a "neutral" place so more people from the 7th could easily attend? Danny Savage stood his ground. I'll tell ya, he has brass ones. Sanchez would have NEVER attended a debate like that if the shoe was on the other foot. I'm disappointed in the Committee of Seventy and expected much better from them and especially from Gar Joseph. It was so staged and phony that when Carlos Matos out of all the people there got picked to ask a question, which of course he aimed at Savage, I wanted to puke how phony the whole set-up was. It's a shame that people can't play fair politics. Gar Joseph should have called out Sanchez and made her explain "her explanation" of her position on DROP. She avoided giving any definite answer unlike Danny Savage who said that he was against DROP for elected officials and wouldn't support any council member in DROP especially for President. What we got from Sanchez's blurb is that she is going to support DROP Queen Tasco and for Council President. Gar Joseph should have called out Sanchez on her involvement with Carlos Matos. Why not? Gar should have asked her why she CHANGED her tune, paid him big money and promised him 2 patronage jobs on her staff for his ward support. Sanchez is now buddy buddy with Matos after YEARS of calling him and the Tartagliones crooks, extortionists, and the "democratic political machine". Sanchez is a hypocrite.

If by great job, AngelR, you mean got his ass kicked by a smarter, more articulate, harder working and dynamic candidate, then you're right. Your boss Danny Savage did a great job! You can try to pass along lies and innuendoes all you want but the videos speak for themselves. Who in the world after watching these videos and the debate really believes that the John Street-loving party hack, Danny Savage can even hold his own against Maria? You don't even believe that. But then again, since you're paid to troll the blogs under assumed Latino names, you have to believe what you are told. And by the way, ask Danny to have one of his groups host a debate in his turf so Maria can have the pleasure of kicking his ass in front of his own folks. I guarantee you that he won't because he's too intimidated my Maria to do so.

It's a shame Ms. Sanchez has narrow minded people working for her.
