Voter ID critics to rally after Supreme Court hearing

Opponents are set to rally this Thursday as the Pennsylvania Supreme Court opens hearings on the state's controversial voter ID law.

“While we continue to fight this confusing, unnecessary and utterly disgraceful new law, it’s crucial that voters are made aware of their rights so that they are ready for Election Day,” state Sen. Hardy Williams said in an announcement.

The hearing will take place at Philadelphia City Hall, and protesters will gather at 5 p.m. in West Philadelphia, at 50th Street and Kingsessing Avenue.

Last month, a Commonwealth Court judge upheld the law, which could disenfranchise disproportionately poor, nonwhite, student and elderly voters across the state. The Supreme Court is split 3-3 thanks to Republican Justice Joan Orie Melvin, who faces corruption charges, being suspended. A 3-3 split automatically upholds the lower court's ruling, and court watchers are watching to see whether Republican Chief Justice and former Philly DA Ron Castille might switch sides to join Democrats, as he has done before.

As many as 43 percent of Philadelphia voters, disproportionately non-white, may not have the correct identification, though there is no way to determine an exact figure.

In other news, the media all sort of declared that Pennsylvania is no longer a swing state last week: President Barack Obama is persistently up on the polls. Neither campaign is running ads in the state, and Super PACs have stopped doing so.

This is good news for the President's reelection campaign, but makes things less interesting for us reporters.

Mr. Romney spent time and money in the state, which voted Democratic in the last five presidential elections, but Republican strategists now say it seems out of reach,” The New York Times reported on Saturday.

Former Gov. Ed Rendell, whose national media stature depends on Pennsylvania remaining important, told DNC delegates to beware of a trap.

"Don't be fooled," said Rendell, according to The Daily News. "I believe they're laying a little bit of a trap for us."
