Rumors circulate ahead of election day

POSTED: Monday, November 5, 2012, 1:42 PM

This morning, Mayor Nutter was doing some correcting of confusion and misinformation on Twitter (and a fair job of not sounding too exasperated about it), as people asked: Would Philly polling places have electricity? "Polling places will have power, thanks." And, does a straight-ticket vote somehow not count for the presidential race? "That makes no sense and is not true."

But apparently, a lot of people are getting the confusing message about whether a straight-ticket vote will count at the top of the ticket in Pennsylvania. Committee of Seventy, a local watchdog group, is urging people to ignore such emails:

Many Pennsylvania voters have gotten e-mails telling them that selecting “Straight Democratic Ticket” at the top of their ballot will not register a vote for Barack Obama.

This is TOTALLY FALSE. Voters who want to vote for every Democrat on the ballot – including Barack Obama – can select “Straight Democratic Ticket.” Voters who want to vote for every Republican on the ballot – including Mitt Romney – can select “Straight Republican Ticket.” The same is true for minority party candidates.

False ads before an election often happen. Make sure you know the truth.

Any voters who believe they are receiving false information about the election or the voting process should call the ELECTION PROTECTION 1-866-OUR-VOTE (1-866-687-8683) HOTLINE or e-mail futureofthecity@seventy.org immediately.
