POSTED: Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 3:26 PM

Philadelphia City Paper, the region’s award-winning, independent alt-weekly, has an opening for a staff writer on our news team.

The staff writer is responsible for investigating, reporting and writing news and human-interest stories for the print version of City Paper as well as the Naked City blog. The staff writer must be able to discover and cultivate sources for stories that will break news or reveal new angles on existing stories. Strong writing skills are required to craft appealing, magazine-like narratives, portraits and investigative reports.

The staff writer averages about two to three news stories per month and four to six cover stories per year, and is required to write blog posts several times a week and contribute to the paper’s social-media efforts. He/she stays abreast of current events, has a strong interest in the workings of local government and is always prepared to report on events as they happen, in line with the philosophy of the paper.

The staff writer must be a team player who will contribute to City Paper’s special issues, such as the Big Vision Awards and City Guide.

City Paper reporters are encouraged to carve out their own beats and keep on top of interesting, progressive ideas in the city, and remain competitive with our weekly and daily competition.

Requirements:

Candidates must have at least at least 2-3 years previous experience writing news-oriented enterprise stories for a daily or weekly paper as a staff member or paid freelancer. Published clips must show proven research, reporting and writing skills with long-form, multi-source stories.

City Paper does not offer relocation assistance. Local and regional candidates will receive preference. Salary is up to $30,000 plus benefits.

To apply:

Please send a cover letter, resume and at least three clips (one or more featuring long-form hard news reporting) to jobs@citypaper.net.

City Paper should approach some writers already in the mix but writing for other publications. Don't wait till applications roll in. Do an outreach, contact established writers and tell them you might be interested in having them write for you.
