West Philly angry about proposed Subway on Baltimore, fears of South Street future

Someone wants to open a Subway sandwich shop at 4533 Baltimore Ave. and many in the diverse and (to put it mildly) left-leaning neighborhood don't want that to happen.

“I oppose it,” says neighbor Margie Politzer. “I don't want to see corporate chains coming to Baltimore Ave. Now we have a wonderful mix of individually owned businesses. I would like to see it remain that way. I think of what happened on South Street and shudder.”

Some on a long neighborhood Facebook thread suggested appealing to Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell. But Politzer doesn't see much hope in blocking the Subway since she says the property is properly zoned.

Others don't seem to mind Subway and just want the recurrently vacant storefront filled. The last store to occupy the space was a weird and not very successful business called “Pickles and Pies: Organic Food and Deli” that didn't seem to sell any organic food.

“I don't have any particular personal opposition to it. But there are people who have opposition to national chains,” says Roger Harman, owner of the The Gold Standard. “Some say, 'we don't want any chains.' And the others say, 'we'd rather have the store occupied than not.'”

Harman's partner is head of the Baltimore Avenue Business Association, and distributed a flyer listing Subway's pros and cons.

Neighbor Morgan Andrews isn't happy. He made a mocking mockup of the Subway advertisement that reads “No Way.”

The Spruce Hill Community Association held a community meeting Tuesday with 15 neighbors and three Subway representatives, including the franchise-holder, a company official, and a lawyer. A zoning hearing is scheduled for Dec. 21 at 2pm (1515 Arch Street, 18th floor, ZBA Hearing Room 18002).
