Yes, Councilman Bobby Henon introduced a resolution honoring Johnny Doc, the guy who funded his election

In Council today, 6th District Councilman Boby Henon introduced a resolution honoring union boss John "Johnny Doc" Dougherty for his upcoming role as Grand Marshall of the 2012 Philadelphia St. Patrick's Day parade.

Hall Monitor, in fact, tweeted this information earlier and then deleted the tweet, partly because of misplaced glasses and an unfamiliarity with the new voices of City Council, and partly because it all seemed just a tad like one of those strange political dreams HM kept having during the primary.

Dougherty, of course, threw considerable political muscle and money behind Henon's campaign for Council. Henon, of course, worked directly under Doc as the political director of IBEW Local 98, the union of which Doc is business manager and boss.

Having confirmed that it was, in fact, Henon who introduced he bill honoring his boss of a few months back, the tweet has gone back up. We apologize for the confusion.

A well Deserved gesture made by the new councilman! FYI, John Dougherty is one of this city's most dedicated citizens who is passionate about many causes that most people really do not know about! Without question his charitable endeavors have made a difference in the lives of countless Philadelphian's and his heart is the size of the Liberty Bell itself. Unfortunately, that stuff doesn't make the news!!!! Kudos to Councilman Henon for the resolution and Congratulations to John Dougherty for the honor!

Great, first order of business for the freshman councilman Henon(6th district), is to pay homage to Johnny"Doc", the man behind the curtain. Go to show, we have the best City Council, that money can buy!!! How about introducing any bill, or homage for the constituents of the 6th District, that voted you into office, and who you work for now!!!

Where does any union get all those extra millions of dollars, that are way more than their operating costs, to throw around to support politicians?

The money comes from their protected monopoly INSIDE our own city allowing them to overcharge everyone 30-35% more than the fair market value of their work. OUTSIDE our city they are not protected by our city council and have to compete in the real world and they lower their bid prices 30-35% to be competitive.

Why do we allow ourselves inside the city to be so raped, deceived and fleeced by these monopolies?
There is nothing at all wrong with any union except that they all are monopolies.
In every other enterprise, monopolies are illegal and the Federal Gov. makes them compete.

Union work is great, the union men and women are great and nice people. The structure of all monopolies, however, is awful, against competition, destroys fair practice of businesses, discourages development, destroys and inflates fair area wages, costs taxpayers millions and millions of dollars, taxes go up, erodes wealth and destroys jobs.

That is the irony. Unions prevent more people from working in each trade.
There is no honest argument against this fact. The additional irony is that if unions would compete fairly, there will be much more work for the men and women in these unions because so many more businesses, developers, loans, private equity, venture capitalists and capital would flow into our city. The domination of unions, as monopolies, holds back our economy, reduces our success and prevents much enterprise and many more jobs in Philadelphia.

Repeat: nothing wrong with the men and women in unions; all good people who do good work. It is the monopoly structure of the business model of all unions that is wrong in our enterprising country and it prevents many more jobs for labor. Many more electricians, too!

why doesn't the racial makeup of the electrician's union reflect that of the city population? Commercial construction within the city is forced to union labor. Shouldn't the union reflect the citizens of the city? Shouldn't those working in the city where union contractors are manditory be city residence? That would make sense.
