City Paper's ElectionEar presents ...

The 2011 ElectionEar Ultimate Primary Poll!

Welcome to City Paper's first-ever (we think) municipal primary election online poll!

On Tuesday, May 17, Philadelphia residents will get to vote in our municipal primary elections — and yes, you're still registered if you voted for or against Obama.

As we noted this week's helpful, entertaining voters' guide and behind-the-scenes cheat sheet, voter turnout is expected to be low — abysmal, in fact — and that's exactly how many political forces in the city want it.

We at City Paper, however, think this election is not only important but interesting. Weird. Politicofabulous. And so we're doing everything we can to inform, encourage and entertain the right and noble electorate of our fair city — including posting this ultimate, no-holds-barred primary poll.

Learn more about the candidates with our CP Ultime Primary Questionnaire

A few notes:

  • For race with just one candidate, we had to add a "Jane Q." or "John Q." Public in order to be able to add a write-in option. Otherwise, candidates appear in the order they will appear on the ballot.
  • Our polls should close when the real polls close: 8 p.m., May 17, 2011.
  • Unfortunately, this poll won't display write-in votes; the poll administratior, though, has access to them. We'll try to post the write-in votes by Saturday morning.
  • You get 5 votes for At-Large, either race
  • You get 2 votes for City Commissioner, either race
  • A number of people have written-in Cheri Honkala for Sheriff. We didn't include her only because Honkala, an independent, is not on the ballot for this primary election.

Or, to hear the hopefuls speak for themselves, check out the ElectionEar's 2011 Ultimate Primary Candidate Questionnaire!

But wait, there's more!: Read a whole election season's worth of coverage from the ElectionEar here!

City Paper, your print issue on the election was SHAMEFUL. There was no information, just useless snarkiness. And by the way, Jeff Hornstein in the 1st District isn't quite a middle aged white guy. He's a middle aged Jew, who has NO HISTORY in the dark mess we call Philadelphia politics. He's also energetic and more full of ideas to waken the sleepy Council than anyone. Do your job.

I wouldn't quite go that far, but it is pretty disingenuous to say Hornstein is endorsed by "big labor" when Squilla is the one backed by John Dougherty. Come on. That deserves a clarification.

Thanks, wish more people citywide knew about this poll. I have followed the. Races and candidates , their histories and knowledge, experience in a variety of areas. I have found many qualified folks. But I endorse Edward J. Nesmith for at Large seat. I remember decades of work he did out of pocket. While struggling personally. Funding out youth leagues, shirts, officials, trophies and more. I could not believe how he stood up, during meetings and challenged pols, government officials and organized civic groups to open their minds to other possibilities. Independent but loyal to commitments. He helped develop our housing stock and save many homes in our area that developers were positioned to take to make fast cash. He went into business with no funds to challenge unions to hire folks and train them, exoffenders , women, young people. Worked with and for the schools to foster better parent involvement. Helped to slow robberies , murders and created public safety. Organized 3-4th police district basketball games to lessen the tension between police and residents. He help a s. Phila high school player ant tend Temple U., providing tutoring, admission fees and a place where she could be interviewed by national recruiters as her family was really struggling. Provided so much more before having and real income. I did not understand his brash methods at times but when results began to pour in time and time again I became convinced. I found that his driving. Force was for his mother, family , neighbors and the older adults that all benefited from his unselfish efforts.
I know no matter what the results are May 17, 2011, he will continue to do what he does. I respect PW and Mr. Nesmith ballot #188. the poll will not show true totals for either candidate but I'm glad you did it!
