Help the blizzard virgin

So, it's official. We're all going to die.

I've lived through a lot of things in my life — this son of a bitch, for instance — but a blizzard is not one of them. (I know this area was hit pretty hard with that monster storm in December, but I was (foolishly) driving through it, all the way to South Carolina, to meet up with my family, because I thought driving through that thing wouldn't be a big deal. I was wrong. So very wrong.) So here's my question for the Cloggers: What should I expect?

In Florida, any time a hurricane got anywhere near the coast, the weathermen would just about masturbate on the air to their newfangled satellite technology, bread and water vanished from grocery store shelves. And then the storm would miss us, and everyone would feel stupid, but it was annoying and inconvenient all the same. I would sort of imagine it's similar here — everyone overreacts, especially on teevee.

But, should I make an Acme run this evening or what?

More importantly, how do you pass the time? Load up on booze? Will the trains and subways shut down? Will the power go out?

In short, Cloggers, tell me what I should know. Post in the comments, or email me at jeffrey.billman@citypaper.net.

oh you poor thing :-) It's already too late to grocery shop with any peace of mind - there was a crowd grabbing at the milk even last night in fact. By later tonite the bread and milk will be scarce. Don't ask me why bread and milk but it's surely a tradition around here! As for me, it's Pina Coladas and Rice pudding. Thinking I'll bundle up and enjoy the snow on the deck, singing Buffett songs and sipping Pina Coladas - pretending it's summer... and eating hot rice pudding to keep warm :-) Enjoy the fun and go with it. If we're going to get snow, let it be the big one!

Snow falling does not make a a blizzard. Do not perpetuate that nonsense. For city that has a tough reputation I've never seen one collapse so fast at the mention of snow. A city that is eminently walk able should worry naught about falling snow; park you cars and enjoy.

Eh. Load up on booze and easily prepared food, pick up a cheap plastic sled-type device, and just enjoy.

Are you joking? You need to go to a bar.

From your days in FLA you be familiar with Hurricane Chow. It works great in snowstorms also.

If you're in charge of your sidewalk, bite the bullet and keep it clear, even if it takes a shovelin' every couple hours. Other than that the choices are either stay home, get drunk and watch the snow. Or go to the bar, get drunk and watch the snow. And then have a snowball fight (though the forecast is for this stuff to be wet and icky)

Hope you are staying safe and warm during this blizzard. To answer some of your questions (altough it might be too late) yes, buses and trains will most likely be shut down. Expect to be snowed in until at least Friday. Plow trucks will be clearing the streets around the clock. The police and other emergancy city personnel will be available for emergancies, but expect to wait a while for them to drive to you. I would pass the time by relaxing, reading, tv, surfing the web, and just spending time with whoever you're stuck in with. When the snow let's up is the best part; dress warmly and go have fun. Your neighborhood will be out enjoying the snow by making snowmen, snow angels, sledding, and having snowball fights. Most important thing I can tell you, Do Not Drive unless you absolutely have to!
