Schuylkill Expressway named 20th worst commute in America

POSTED: Wednesday, January 20, 2010, 8:47 PM

Those of you still commuting by car take heart (and then wise up) : The Schuylkill Expressway, aka the Sure-Kill Distressway, aka Sucker Expressway, aka Seventy-Sucks, aka Home of the gaper delay, etc., etc., blah blah blah, was only ranked 20th among the country's worst commutes by The Daily Beast yesterday. To wit:

Weekly hours of bottleneck congestion: 205
Worst bottleneck: Eastbound, Montgomery Dr/Exit 341
Length of worst bottleneck: 1.53 mi
Weekly hours of congestion on worst bottleneck: 34
Speed of worst bottleneck when congested: 22.9 mph

Commuter Buzz: "Frankly, we don't need any more rain," Gary Szatkowski told the Philadelphia Inquirer, after a 2009 that saw a rain-induced mudslide close part of the Schuylkill.

Sure, those 205 hours of bottleneck congestion per week are a bummer, and mudslides are a bitch, but it could have been so much worse. The No. 1 worst commute, LA's Hollywood Freeway checked in at 686 weekly hours of bottleneck congestion.

Kinda makes you want to get a trailpass, eh 'burbies?

The list starts from No. 1 here.

This article is WRONG - I've sat at a dead stop for hours a few times. Not only that the speed drops down to 5mph frequently. Obviously whoever wrote the article never drove on it during rush hour. What I cannot stand is the idiots who rubberneck and cause a massive gaper delay for the dumbest stuff every single day.

How can a week have more than 168 hours of bottleneck congestion?

awesome.

Please call the President of my company and tell her to move our business closer (within walking distance) of a train stop. Or. Please help me find a job that I am qualified for and will enjoy immensely that pays me as well (or almost as well) in the city. And then, PLEASE tell the idiots who cause needless accidents on the Schuylkill to quit being idiots. For example, please don't read the paper or a book while driving. Obviously, quit texting or sexting while driving. Honestly, I really don't care to see you pluck your eyebrows and chin hairs while driving, sh*t is gross. Mascara application and driving do not mix. Alright. I'm not really done, but I'll stop.

Maybe tolling 76 would help. I know there is little space to work with, but could we eliminate what little shoulder there is and squeeze an HOV/express bus lane in? At least in one direction? Please.

@davidcl: I suspect they add up the hours of congestion and different bottleneck points.

I once saw a guy in an old car with a 13 inch TV jammed onto his dashboard, watching it as he drove the Surekill.

A toll should not be used to control traffic volume. This road was already paid for with tax money, therefore it would need to ALL be paid back, with interest, should it be made into a toll road. Special approval would also be needed.
