Here's the (Google Translated) explanation:

When Sami Kapanen (# 24) had announced the closure of his career as a player in May 2010, I approached him ideallani to make a unique portrait of respect for his long career. The idea was to make the traditional portrait of a different image, which reflects a Sam's colorful career stages, as well as statistics on cities and teams, where the Sami had played during his career. The original was my idea to do a little "Mad Max "-style picture of a tornado has torn through the urban scene. Jere Hietala image goalie Jani Hurmeesta haaksirikkoontuneiden ship in the middle was also a big source of ideas for the entire project. Sami's idea was inspired by him, and gave me carte blanche to go to the portrait. I asked the partner to the table frame makers frame makers Jari Salli, which did not have long to persuade this wonderful project that.

You get the gist. If you read Finnish, click here to learn about the many stages of brainstorming and computer imagsing it took to bring this thing into existence.

Here is bit better translation in english:

---

When Sami Kapanen (# 24) had announced the end of his career as a hockey player in May 2010, I approached him with an idea to make him an unique portrait to respect his long career. The idea was to make a special portrait which reflects his colorful career, as well as statistics, cities and teams where Sami had played during his years as a professional hockeyplayer.

The original idea was to create "Mad Max"-style picture where tornado or hurricane has torn through a urban city scene. Sami got interested about the portrait, and gave me permission to proceed with the project.

The project began to move forward at the end of the summer when I took photographs of Sami shooting on ice. Sami had forgotten to take the KalPa hockey jersey with him, but when Sami walked onto the ice without the jersey it was clear that mere protectors on Sami gave more attitude and an appropriate feeling to the image theme.

By coincidence I became acquainted with a young talented German artist Manuel Rumpf, who I persuaded to join the project. Together We designed the general feeling and the main elements to the picture.

We began to work on the files separately and decided to put the images together at a later stage. Manuel started to model the buildings in 3D or painted them with the computer. After that I texturized them with real life photograph textures.

Step by step the picture began to take shape. Details were added and the final form of the picture began to show. I tried to find interesting ways of presentating the statistics in the form of pictures.

In December after colorful process the picture was finally finished, printed and delivered to Jari Sallinen for framing. Jari made a contribution to the image by creating the unique picture frames finalizing the rough and edgy look.

The image, simply called "24" was released January 8th at the opening of the new KalPa club. At the same time the picture was also revealed at Alias Studiot website (www.aliasstudiot.fi), where the image can be zoomed and viewed at full size.

"Post Apocalyptic Philadelphia" = how most people from the suburbs (ie Flyers fans) already see our city.

Yeah. Some benchhawk called Pronger names and Bob Brady put on a Chicago jersey but I can't give a shit right now. Circus is over. Flyers fought hard, defied all odds and expectations, and lost.

Are you betting on the Flyers? This guy is.

Think Pierre Maguire is the most useless hockey commentator of all time? You're right. But Canadian TV viewers appear to be in their own personal hell.

Do the Flyers make you want to be a better person? @earth_lovin's feelin' like that: "I realize I haven't been very nice lately but, that can all change if... the #Flyers win tonight. Let's Go Flyers."

Flyered up on the pregnant belly. Wow. Flyered up on the highway. Yay. Flyered up on the highway x 100000!!! Watch Flyer Frank spraypaint his car orange. Holy crap, dude.

There's a pep rally at noon today at the Wach.

Hey Wayne Gretzky. BOBBY CLARKE IS ALIVE. You have to be dead to have a ghost, usually. But we thank you for your support.

Leighton will start. But will he?! Yes, TSN. Stop pretending.

Ooh, there's gonna be a TV show about NHL refs. "Bill McCreary has seen it all over nearly three decades of officiating NHL games..." Really? Pretty sure he missed a bloody high sticking call on Sunday.

Tonight, people.

It looks photoshopped, but it's not.
His head just looks like that.

Yes, I saw that Conan was wearing a numberless Flyers jersey at the Tower show last night (click on that — 700Level's got lots of clips). And Trey Anastasio was wearing a Briere jersey. I assume the song is still winding down. I got more Flyered seeing a dude rocking a Brashear jersey on my way to work.

This is funny, but after the last game it has a little less bite. This gets old. This is funny still.

Never forget: Patrick Kane is the kind of guy who would beat up a cab driver for 2o cents.

What's your favorite Flyers symbol subversion? This one with a heart for a dot is nice, but I would loooove a shirt with this one from the Philadelphia Ghostbusters site. That is sweet.

Dear referees: Look at the blood. You effed up.

Are we living in the present? Rich Hofman of the Daily News thinks the Flyers need a new J.J. Daigneault. Then he types his thoughts up for us to read. He's right, though. We need a hero.

Here's some tweets of inspiration from @TastyBakingCo, @Mike_Tursi and Peter Laviolette.

Tomorrow night, people.

  • Flyers Win! Black Hawks lose! Ville Leino is awesome. Scott Hartnell, too! And Giroux! I'm freaking out go flyers. Okay. Settling down. Watch all the highlights here.
  • It was really loud at the Wachovia Center, apparently; click on that link to see an event/decibel correlation.
  • Were you at the game? ?uestlove was, and he approves.
  • What's the deal with that Rednex Rebellion hat Mike Richards is always wearing in the post-game interview? I don't know. They're a clothing company.
  • Great recap/analysis at the700level.
  • Philly.com has a slideshow showing, among other things, the Flyers' pre-game ritual of kicking a soccerball around in the depths of the Wach. (Warning: An advertisement starts yelling at you about a truck when you go to the page.)
  • Conshy Bakery says they have a Flyers-related magic tomato pie. They have a picture of it; looks like they put cheese on their tomato pie. I do not approve.
Go Flyers.
It's not pronounced like that, but that's cool.
