For an old queen, the Gayborhood sure has been getting a lot of action lately. To celebrate our gayest enclave’s 40th birthday, members of the Philadelphia Gay Tourism Caucus are hosting a two-week extravaganza called “There’s No Place Like Home,” which runs concurrently with QFest. They hope that the lineup of festivities will draw attention to the growing number of gay-friendly businesses that have opened up in recent years.

To officially kick off the festivities, Mayor Michael Nutter attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday with other gay and straight community leaders, such as QFest’s Thom Cardwell and Jeff Guaracino from the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation. Because of the rain, the event was held at capacity inside Independent Hotel at 12th and Locust streets.

In his speech, Nutter announced the installation of 32 more rainbow street signs throughout the Gayborhood and gushed about the area’s contribution to Philadelphia as one of its most thriving business districts. “My takeaway from the event is how proud the mayor and the community are about the Gayborhood,” says GPTMC’s Bruce Yelk, one of the organizers behind “There’s No Place Like Home.”

Now that the official ceremonies are complete, it’s time to get out and party. The fun peaked yesterday at the Gayborhood Block Party (see video of it here), but there’s still enough hoopla to keep you busy over the next two weeks. So you don’t drop too much of that hard-earned cash, Yelk says partakers can acquire a Rainbow Discount Pass that will provide savings at a slew of Gayborhood bars, eateries and clothing boutiques. To learn how to obtain it and get a rundown of events happening over the next two weeks, go here.

Remember the Riders Against Gender Exclusion (awesome acronym, BTW) protest earlier this week, in which transgender activists dressed in drag and marched around City Hall, in order to speak out against SEPTA's M/F gender transit passes?

It turns out that Chicago's TG community is grappling with a similar problem: Their rail system Metra also insists on keeping its M/F gender stickers, also because the company claims it cuts down on theft.

Hey, so the bigots and knuckle-draggers lost. This is good news. And hey, who knows, maybe after failing to get this thing through three times in the last four years, maybe the jagoffs behind this perpetual bit of legislative hatred will catch the hint. Or not. Of course, gay marriage is already banned here, but it's not in the constitution, so, you know … activist judges + two dudes doing it in the butt = the end of every single marriage in the Commonwealth!

Onward, Christian soldiers.

Pennsylvania no likee.

So … the Pennsylvania Senate Judiciary Committee is set to vote on SB707 today, which would amend our state constitution to add a cute little part about marriage being defined as "between one man and one woman." Which is appalling.

But the weird thing is, Pa. has a ton of anti-gay marriage laws on the books already. We've got the 1996 Pennsylvania Marriage Statute, which defines marriage as one XX-er and one XY-er, only. Then of course there's the Defense of Marriage Act (thank you Clinton!). Add that to the aforementioned state marriage statute, which also ensures that no gays married in Vermont or D.C. or Mars will be recognized as such in our state, and you gotta wonder — is Pennsylvania in some sort of God Hates Fags-funded contest to become the most anti-gay state in the republic?

Jack Mackenroth, a former Mr. Gay Philadelphia host

What's almost as good as being the host city for the Olympics? Being the host city for the 2010 national Mr. Gay pageant. While Philly has been home to Mr. Gay Philadelphia, a preliminary competition to Mr. Gay U.S.A., for many gay years now, this is the first time it will be the host city for the national contest.

It'll go down on Nov. 13 at Voyeur (1221 St. James St., 215-735-5772). Don't miss the Philly boys competing to get into the final round on April 17, at the same venue.
