The City Paper

In the past, we've ascribed to the thousand-points-of-light approach to the best of issue. Name as many things good or bad as you can, come up with a crazy theme, and let the praise (and disses) fly.
This year was a little different. If you'll allow me to quote myself:
This wasn't a normal year.
We just couldn't wrap it up with a normal 'City Paper' Choice issue.
In the past, our annual celebration of the best of the city featured page after page of short, clever bursts of praise little bits of cinnamon, as a friend once called it for just about every single thing that tickled our fancy in a given year.
Not this year. Not anymore.
We sought out the people with Big Visions, making big strides not only for themselves but for the city. You can read about how we chose our 12 Visionaries and who they are starting right here.
Yo! We're looking for City Paper editorial interns (for both A&E and news) for the fall. The Thursday, August 13 application deadline is tomorrow, so get crackin'. Read all the details after the jump.

We are currently accepting applications for Fall 2009 intern positions. This internship requires a familiarity with the Philadelphia area and an interest in contemporary arts and culture. Primary responsibilities include keeping up with weekly beats for our listings section and writing weekly entertainment-oriented columns. * Pitching/writing features for the arts, music and food sections

All internships are unpaid. We are flexible about when you can start and end, but preference will be given to those who can begin first thing in September and stay throughout December.
To apply, mail a cover letter, résumé, three references (just the names and numbers of people is fine, no letters needed) and three clips (no more, no less) to the address listed below. Also, include when you can begin and end. We are also accepting e-mail applications (see contact address). No phone calls, please. Act fast, because these positions don't stay open for long.

We've got some explaining to do. Last month, the Arts Agenda section vanished from the paper. It didn't even leave a note. At the same time, the listings for galleries, museums, readings/book signings and performing arts suddenly started appearing in the Agenda section.
So what gives? Arts Agenda and Agenda got married. (Actually, I guess you'd call it "eloping," since they did it slyly.) It makes sense if you think about it — before, it was unclear why there was both an Arts section and an Arts Agenda section. Now there's only one. And besides, they didn't even have to change last names when they got married.
But I'm done anthropomorphizing newspaper sections. The important point here is that there are often fewer listings in the print version of City Paper than before. Sometimes you may not see "Adults, etc." or "Volunteers" in print — but they will always, always be available online at citypaper.net/agenda_search. I thought that most people knew about our online listings, but then I got inundated with e-mails from people who thought we had flushed them down the toilet. We haven't, so please let your friends who aren't Internet heads know: They'll always be alive and well right here on the Web.
