Dino poop. Seriously.

Coprolite is another word for poo — specifically, really old, fossilized poo. Dinosaur coprolite, which was found in Saskatchewan, Canada, will be on sale for the first time ever in the United States this weekend, Feb. 13 and 14, at the Academy of Natural Sciences (1900 Ben Franklin Parkway, 215-299-1000). (Previously, the Canadians didn't want to give up their precious poo, which is 66 million years old, and apparently worth a lot of money.) Better yet, a local — Michael McGrail, of Doylestown — is responsible for finding and marketing the stuff in the U.S. Sez McGrail:

Each specimen is packaged in a 4-ounce tin can with Jurassic Park-like graphics, nestled snugly inside on a bed of moss and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

When you put it that way, it sounds downright adorable.

Well, this pic isn't nearly the catch made by MealTicket editor Drew Lazor when he caught a PPA truck parked next to a fire hydrant – during a fire alarm – but it's not bad.

Last night, local man Frank Iacovino pulled me from my Lord Chesterfield at the Khyber to point out the following (we apologize for the lousy picture: you call that a phone camera, Frank?): a PPA car, parked in a no-parking zone, idling, its driver inside.

Ah, you say – but was she writing a ticket? Checking a license plate? Just doing her job?

Ladies and gentlemen: she was eating a slice of pizza.

Frank Iacovino
The PPA: parked (illegally) in front of the Khyber, idling, eatin' a slice.

A friend of mine got a parking ticket in center city recently and he can prove that he had left and was back at his home computer a half hour before the ticket was written. Should be interesting to see how that works out. I would bet a lot of parking tickets are fraudulent.

The Round Word
She'd be proud, me thinks.

On Tuesday, I lamented that no one in this fair city had signed up for Jane's Walk, a national event that takes place on May 2 and 3. Inspired by Jane Jacobs, the urban know-it-all and author of The Death and Life of Great American Cities, it seeks to encourage community bonding and pride by having locals give tours of the places they live, work or play in. As the Web site for the event explains, "Jacobs believed strongly that local residents understood best how their neighborhood works, and what is needed to strengthen and improve them."

But then, this morning, I got an encouraging e-mail from the Preservation Alliance:

The Preservation Alliance will launch its new architectural walking tours with a FREE guided walking tour of the LITTLEST STREETS EAST OF BROAD as a participant in Jane’s Walk commemorating the birthday of the great urban thinker Jane Jacobs.

To which I have to say, take that, Moscow Pride! We feel safe walking on our streets, too! The event will take place on May 2 at 2 p.m., and attendees can meet at the center of Kahn Park, on 11th & Pine streets. A walk down the little, oft-overlooked streets east of Broad — sounds perfect for that 80 degree weather we'll be having on Saturday, peeps.

The Round Word
Sweet glasses, Jane.

I've heard people time and time again say that Philly has an inferiority complex — to which I've either disagreed, or said that we're simply modest compared to the megalomaniac city two hours north. But maybe there's something to it — not a single soul has signed up for Jane's Walk, a national event (May 2 & 3) that's inspired by the urban matron saint, Ms. Jacobs. The idea behind it is this:

Jane's Walk raises urban literacy by combining the simple act of walking with personal observations, urban history, planning, design and civic engagement ... All Jane’s Walk tours are given and taken for free. These walks are led by anyone who has an interest in the neighborhoods where they live, work or hang out. They are not always about architecture and heritage, and offer a more personal take on the local culture, the social history and the planning issues faced by the residents. Jacobs believed strongly that local residents understood best how their neighborhood works, and what is needed to strengthen and improve them.

Sounds like something right up Philly's alley, no? And, though anyone can sign up, no one has. (If you're wondering why I haven't, it's simply a fear of public speaking that's holding me back. If anyone wants to provide the Valium, I'll provide the tour.) Seriously, people — Moscow, Idaho is signed up. WTF is Moscow, Idaho and why does someone care about it more than we do Philly?

The end of days.
weblogs.newsday.com

According to scientists, pretty badly. Personally, I'm picturing an even more dystopic version of when the Phillies won. Frat boys will flip cars, burn their underwear and loot stores but there won't be a parade or cleaning crews to make it all better the next day. Just a countdown to doomsday. Here's what Nels Johnson, a Nature Conservancy scientist, says about it:

Today, Philadelphia sees 20 days of 90 degrees or warmer. Under some of the climate change scenarios the more extreme ones especially if [we] don’t really do much to control emissions over the next several decades, we could be seeing as many as 70 or more days of 90 degrees.

Hold on, 70 days of 90 degrees is a bad thing? It's hard to think of it like that when there are dozens of sundresses in my closet collecting dust. But seriously, folks, there isn't enough Arctic Splash in the whole of Phildelphia to make that level of climate change OK. Find out how you can curb your CO2 emissions to save the city at Johnson's lecture with Wayne Klockner, vice president of the Nature Conservany.
