Neighborhood Bike Works is taking full advantage of the Martin Luther King holiday and day of service, recruiting volunteers to help spruce up its old and *new* locations.
REI and the Bicycle Club of Philadelphia are sponsoring the event (REI is kicking in a $7,000 grant for an Earn a Bike mountain bike program) and there's still time to volunteer (today and in the glorious future of 2010). Locations are below.
On the *new* note: NBW is expanding both its children's programing and its supremely awesome bike church to North Philly, near Temple the drop-in public bike shop, powered by volunteers who will not only help you find what you need but teach you how to fix your bike yourself.
It's a terrific program, it raises funds for the kids, and it's a hell of a way to learn about bikes, whatever your starting skill level (I volunteer there myself!). The fact that there will soon be a bike church in North Philly â and, apparently, one in South Philly and other locations at some point â increases tremendously Philadelphia's coolness as a city, so this is good news.
The new location is already open for kids' programs, and the expanded bike church program will be opening soon. E-mail Cat for more info or to volunteer.
Locations for volunteering today (call 215-386-0316):
3916 Locust Walk
230 N. Salford Street.
1424-1426 Susquehanna Ave.

Well, this pic isn't nearly the catch made by MealTicket editor Drew Lazor when he caught a PPA truck parked next to a fire hydrant â during a fire alarm â but it's not bad.
Last night, local man Frank Iacovino pulled me from my Lord Chesterfield at the Khyber to point out the following (we apologize for the lousy picture: you call that a phone camera, Frank?): a PPA car, parked in a no-parking zone, idling, its driver inside.
Ah, you say â but was she writing a ticket? Checking a license plate? Just doing her job?
Ladies and gentlemen: she was eating a slice of pizza.

Imagine. A slice of pizza.
A friend of mine got a parking ticket in center city recently and he can prove that he had left and was back at his home computer a half hour before the ticket was written. Should be interesting to see how that works out. I would bet a lot of parking tickets are fraudulent.
rough camera phone but good enough to get that vehicle number: 362.
Friday: Performance artist Rebecca Nagle blows out the box with her newest show A Dozen Thing I Want to Do on Stage, where she'll tinker with audience-performer dynamics. Similarly, the North Chicago Dance Co. tinkers with dance genres, mixing and matching until they get the perfect combo. Their show begins the dance calendar of the 2nd Season Arts Guide, but movin' and groovin' ain't all. There's also Rock/Pop, Roots, Classical, Jazz, Visual Art, Theater and Movies calendars. Not to mention A.D.'s crystal ball into Philly's arty future. Spooky. You can even check out cover outtakes!

Don't block Rebecca Nagle's box
Saturday: Mama Omnibus will certainly be one of the ladies out for blood/a good deal at the Sugarhabit Warehouse Sale: Winter Edition. Come and join me ⦠unless we have the same taste in clothes ⦠then you should go to the new farmers' market starting up at the Piazza. But you're gonna need to bring your A-game tonight, 'cause Joey's and his Girls will be looking smokin'. Check out Neal Santos' vid of the ladies below:
Sunday: Taylor Ho Bynum don't mean to toot his own horn ⦠but he is the co-curator of the Festival of New Trumpet Philadelphia (rimshot!). If you're not feeling horny (Oh my sides! The puns! The puns!!), then check out the Wilma's sharp Becky Shaw, by Law & Order writer Gina Gionfriddo. Dun, dun.

Jason Fagone, in the new issue of GQ, lays the deed directly at Harrison's feet, recreating the scene from interviews, court records and police report. Here's a taste:
marvin darnell harrison was not supposed to be this guy, the black athlete with a gun. Insecure, obnoxious, prone to acts of catharsis that was Terrell Owens, Michael Vick. But Marvin?
Marvin drank juice.
He was a worker. Marvin was the guy who never wore his gloves in practice because the gloves were sticky and made catching balls easy, and he wanted to practice the hard way. He was the neat freak who sat with his back to the press at a locker that would make a drill sergeant swoon. Marvin, who juked my repeated requests for an interview, was the perfectionist who evolved an ability to communicate almost telepathically with his quarterback, Peyton Manning, but barely at all with mere English. If he left any trace of his existence in the league, it was only in the record books: second (to Jerry Rice) in all-time receptions, third in all-time one-hundred-yard games, first in receptions in a single season. Through all this, his teammates claimed they didn't know him in the slightest. "He's like Batman," linebacker Cato June told Sports Illustrated.
Think about the discipline it would take to make a living as an elite star of a multi-billion-dollar entertainment juggernaut without ever once being truly seen. In this sense, Harrison's football career is not only historic; it's also a sort of miracle. The dude skipped like a flat stone across a rancid pool and emerged, twelve years later, dry as a bone.

Earlier this evening the Haitian Professionals of Philadelphia sent out the following email to the Philadelphia Young Democrats mailing list.
Drop Off Sites, Donation and Fundraiser information below.
Greetings:
It has been a difficult night. Many of us are in a state of shock or more fittingly in disbelief. As an business that prides itself in keeping the rich culture of Haiti alive in Philadelphia, myself and the Haitian Professionals of Philadelphia (HPP) send our deepest and most sincere condolences to our Haitian family in our area and around the world.
We have secured a private jumbo jet to transport supplies to Haiti which is leaving in the next 24 - 48hours. We are in need of DOCTORS, NURSES and DONATIONS to go to Haiti in order to provide medical care. Vivant & HPP is currently coordinating with The Haitian Coalition of Philadelphia, the Haitian Clergy of Philadelphia, Beyond Boarders, the Mayor's Office, Temple Haitian Student Association, University of Pennsylvania Haitian Student Association, Congressman Brady's office, Philadelphia Young Democrats, political officials and other Haitian organizations in the surrounding area to devise a plan to provide assistance to Haiti. Frequent updates will be made to the site www.hpphilly.org and www.vivantartcollection.com/events/ so please check back often. In the meantime, if you wish to provide assistance we urge you to do the following:
Supplies Needed
- Make a monetary donation to Haitian Professionals of Philadelphia to the Haitian Relief Fund via paypal. All funds will go towards purchasing of items that must be bought in Haiti to defray shipping cost as well as medical supplies.
- Purchase or bring cots and tents that will be instrumental in providing temporary shelter to those who have been displaced.
- Medical supplies such as band aids, alcohol, peroxide, etc.
- Water and non-perishable food items.
- Generators and Industrial supplies for building will be needed for rebuilding.
- Supplies for children such as diapers, baby clothes, wipes and bottles are of great need as well.

There are two options on that list that allow you to donate post haste:

Texting the word HAITI to 90999 will donate $10 to the Red Cross.
