John Boehner, the House Minority Leader, floated an interesting idea today. Asked if he agreed with the head of the Chamber of Commerce that the US government that is to say, you know, you and me, fellow taxpayer should share the cost, along with BP, of the oil spill disaster in the Gulf. His response? I think the people responsible in the oil spill BP and the federal government should take full responsibility for what's happening there.
Later on in the day, his flacks started walking this back. BP, says flack, should be wholly responsible for the clean-up.
Of course they are responsible for the clean up. The question is, are they responsible for the damage? In other words, BP will have to pay to remove the crude from the water; that is all but certain. But will they have to pay the fishermen whose lives they ruined beyond the pathetic $75 million cap that Congress established years ago?
There is a move in Congress to retroactively abolish that bullshit cap and make BP pay for its negligence. The Chamber of Commerce actively opposes this.
Where will today's bought-and-paid-for, corporatist Republican Party come down? Stay tuned.
[...] more likely approach, in my opinion, is a full-scale bailout by you and me. That route is already wending its way through Congress, although GOP House leader John Boehner is shying away from the idea he proposed [...]
Screw him.He and people like him should be tared and feathered (and I hope he sees m comment)
That's funny...in the link you presented, NOWHERE could I find Boehner saying ANYTHING about a "bailout". In fact, your link shows that Boehner CONTRADICTS your thesis multiple times. Just because you linked to TPM (a far left blog) and THEY whined about a non-existent bailout, doesn't change reality, slappy. And if there is a bailout, blame the party controlling the House, the Senate, and the Oval Office. Duh.
A response to Barack Obama's oval office speech on the oil spill: Public Policy Polling: Fallout From The Spill "Our new Louisiana poll has a lot of data points to show how unhappy voters in the state are with Barack Obama's handling of the oil spill but one perhaps sums it up better than anything else- a majority of voters there think George W. Bush did a better job with Katrina than Obama's done dealing with the spill. 50% of voters in the state, even including 31% of Democrats, give Bush higher marks on that question compared to 35% who pick Obama. Overall only 32% of Louisianans approve of how Obama has handled the spill to 62% who disapprove. 34% of those polled say they approved of how Bush dealt with Katrina to 58% who disapproved." http://publicpolicypolling.blogspot.com/2010/06/fallout-from-spill.html
Gallup: "By a six-point margin, more Americans disapprove than approve of President Barack Obama's handling of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The president's 40% approval rating on the oil spill trails his overall job approval rating by seven points." http://www.gallup.com/poll/139406/Americans-Rate-Obama-Points-Worse-Spill-Overall.aspx

Progressive Philly clergyman, Reverend Robin Hynicka |
We just received word from Arch Street Methodist Church Reverend Robin Hynicka who has led his congregation in campaigns for the city's poor and homeless, as well as in opposition to casinos in the city that a coalition of faith groups will be holding a prayer vigil tonight, at Arch Street Methodist at Broad and Arch, in opposition to Arizona's new immigration laws:
People of faith in Philadelphia will join their voices in prayer on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at 6pm to show support for the people of Arizona as they prepare for new extreme anti-immigrant legislation to go into effect on July 28, facing firsthand the devastating consequences of federal inaction on comprehensive immigration reform. In addition, the faith community will sign Not in Our State petitions calling on Gov. Rendell to oppose legislation like Arizonas and pray for courageous leadership in Washington to act now on immigration reform that keeps families together and fixes our broken system.
Excitingly, this is part of a national faith campaign called "The Isaiah 58 Summer" named not for this reporter, of course, but the biblical prophet who, in Chapter 58, has this to say about things:
Is this the kind of fast I have chosen,
only a day for a man to humble himself?
Is it only for bowing one's head like a reed
and for lying on sackcloth and ashes?
Is that what you call a fast,
a day acceptable to the LORD ?
6 "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?
7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter
when you see the naked, to clothe him,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
Yeah. Some benchhawk called Pronger names and Bob Brady put on a Chicago jersey but I can't give a shit right now. Circus is over. Flyers fought hard, defied all odds and expectations, and lost.

Want to feel even more estranged from the city's tourists than you already do? Check out this sweet map by Eric Fischer, creator of "Locals and Tourists" series on Flickr, which tracks where in cities locals (users whose shots are pretty much always taken in the same city, over a long period of time) take photos, versus tourists (those whose images from a particular place last for a month or less, and usually come from another city). Red means tourists; blue means locals (duh).
No shockers, but pretty cool, right?
RELATED>> Map Geeked: What Philadelphia will (hopefully) look like in 2035
Pretty cool, but I don't understand why this should make me "feel even more estranged from the city's tourists". Tourists go to the tourist areas. This is not disappointing.
Cool! How do I make such a map for my city?
In case anyone else wants the answer to my question, look here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/walkingsf/sets/72157624209158632/ I still don't know how to create my own, but it looks like many cities have had maps created already.
Just got word from the Loyal Opposition, a group of Republican insurgents trying to take down the Republican City Committee's de facto leader Michael Meehan and Co., that they'll be protesting tonight at the United Republican Club (3156 Frankford Ave.) at 6 p.m. They argue that the Meehan is not recognizing several ward leaders who won fair and square, simply because they are part of the Republican insurgency. Sez the LO:
The Meehan machine is attempting to overturn the results of Ward Leader elections that occurred legally, and in conjunction with current by-laws, simply because they do not like the outcome of those valid elections. This Kangaroo Court is a fraud and disgrace to our city.
They have demonstrated a pattern of deceit, corruption, forgery, and even raising people from the dead during this entire party rebuilding effort. They are attempting every backhanded trick to keep the Philly GOP small, quiet, and complacent to the wishes of their Democrat bosses. The smaller the Philly GOP is, the easier it is to control. This cannot be allowed to stand!! ?
The Clog'll keep you posted as we learn more.

If these so call leaders wanted to dump Michael Meehan then why did Al Schmidt recomend Meehan for his current post. Now they have another one of these so called leaders going on fox 29 kevin kelly saying that the RCC is racist because a ward leader was told to leave because he did not have the proper paper work and just happen to be from north philly and non white i cant believe he sank that low to try and use the race card when if you look at all the ward leaders sure most are white but there are atleast 10 or so black ward leaders one asian ward leader and a couple spanish ward leaders and kevin did you know every one of the except two voted for meehan and everyone of them except one voted for the bylaw changes so nice try useing the race card you shown your groups true colors.
Real Republican - I don't know where you were last Wednesday but dollars to doughnuts you're on the PPA payroll.

And this shocking video of the alleged "drinking" (it looks empty to me):
Now I don't have any babies of my own, but I did used to live with one, and she loved beer bottles: picking them up, putting her mouth on them, banging them on stuff they're just satisfyingly shaped or something.
I think this whole baby beer bottle thing is being overblown, and I offer the following pictures, but a small subset of the results from my "baby beer bottle" Google search, as proof:
Meanwhile, send us your beer baby pictures! We'll publish them here let's call it a contest!

Are you betting on the Flyers? This guy is.
Think Pierre Maguire is the most useless hockey commentator of all time? You're right. But Canadian TV viewers appear to be in their own personal hell.
Do the Flyers make you want to be a better person? @earth_lovin's feelin' like that: "I realize I haven't been very nice lately but, that can all change if... the #Flyers win tonight. Let's Go Flyers."
Flyered up on the pregnant belly. Wow. Flyered up on the highway. Yay. Flyered up on the highway x 100000!!! Watch Flyer Frank spraypaint his car orange. Holy crap, dude.
There's a pep rally at noon today at the Wach.
Hey Wayne Gretzky. BOBBY CLARKE IS ALIVE. You have to be dead to have a ghost, usually. But we thank you for your support.
Leighton will start. But will he?! Yes, TSN. Stop pretending.
Ooh, there's gonna be a TV show about NHL refs. "Bill McCreary has seen it all over nearly three decades of officiating NHL games..." Really? Pretty sure he missed a bloody high sticking call on Sunday.
Tonight, people.
Shocking: PPA officials fixed tickets for their buds.
So finds an Office of Inspector General (OIG) report, concluding that hearing examiners at the Bureau of Administrative Adjudication (BAA) have been improperly dismissing parking tickets for friends and family. Among the six government workers on the chopping block was former Finance Deputy Director Clorise Wynn, who resigned just before the Inspector General Amy L. Kurland released her report (she insisted one had nothing to do with the other, and we totally believe her).
Harsh words from the OIG:
The investigation shows how crucial good management is to any department. Clorise Wynn created a workplace that was devoid of clear rules, isolated line staff, and left gaps in supervision that compromised the integrity of her department. This left Wynns staff to learn office practices from her example alone, which provided a lesson only in what not to do.
In addition to failing to implement a no-ticket-fixing-for-my-people policy, the report alleges that Wynn dismissed hundreds of parking tickets for friends and 35 (!) for her daughter. Others found at fault in the OIG ticket-fixing probe include former BBA supervisor Joanna Schofield, hearing examiners Yvette Garcia and Denean Hardy, and the PPAs Reginald Bass-Reid and Robin Bass.
Heres another interesting tidbit: Its only been five years since the last ticket-fixing scam blew up in the city. And who might you think was responsible for cracking the case the last time around?
From the Daily News:
As a federal prosecutor before she became inspector general, [IG Amy] Kurland brought criminal charges against the former director of the BAA, Joseph F. Hoffman Jr., for taking $4,000 in payoffs to throw out $40,000 in parking tickets for taxi kingpin Michael Etemad.
Well thank you, inspector.
Full text of the OIG report recommendations can be found here: http://www.phila.gov/oig/news.html.

But it's pretty damn close to being decriminalized.
Remember when we told you back in April that District Attorney Seth Williams announced that the possession of 30 grams of marijuana or less would be treated as a summary offense, rather than lead to possible jail time and a criminal record, as it did before? (A summary offense, by the way, means that cops can choose to either do a custodial arrest or issue a court appearance date. Should be interesting to see how that decision goes down the majority of the time.)
Anyway, the policy goes into effect today, PhillyNORML reports! Party time.
PREVIOUSLY>> Weed is practically decriminalized in Philly
PREVIOUSLY>> Seth Williams: "We are not decriminalizing marijuana"
Seth Williams is a g-dsend! I am not just saying that because I enjoy cannabis, and do not enjoy being hassled by cops in the illadelph - I'm saying it because the man is brilliant. He is saving the city of brotherly love more than $3 million per year, and an immeasurable amoutnt of time for police officers and court employees. Bravo, Mr. Williams, bravo!
