Philly Tea Partiers protest health care reform in March. They've since moved
on to attacking immigration reform.

Except, Mayor Nutter has made it perfectly clear that Philadelphia is not a sanctuary city. And as of last week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was still luring in local cabbies with the promise of getting their owed credit-card payments, only to put their names on a deportation list. Also, now that the agreement between ICE and the city over its Preliminary Arraignment Reporting System ends Aug. 31 — not last week, like originally thought — nothing is set in stone, and Nutter has said that his intent is simply to protect "information about victims and witnesses of crimes."

But no matter, the Philadelphia Tea Party is protesting this "sanctuary city." An e-mail this morning from the group says:

Local and state immigration reform activists along with representatives of area-building trades unions, and tea party groups, will hold a press conference  July 8th [at 11 a.m., at the National Constitution Center] charging that politically motivated sanctuary policies that shield illegal aliens with arrest records from immigration officials makes them complicit in jeopardizing the public safety of all residents, citizens and visitors to this city.

…

Peter Gadiel, 911 Families for a Secure America remarks, "Mayor Nutter's decision to conceal illegal alien criminals from federal immigration authorities WILL result in the deaths of innocent Americans. We who have been the victims of crimes committed by illegal aliens have paid the price for such policies implemented by other politicians who are more interested in the votes of illegals and their supporters than in the safety of American citizens."

For Days I have heard Dom Giordano from 1210 refer to Philadelphia aa a Sanctuary City,,,, I have listened to Dom long enough to know that his need to be relevant to any and every story in Philadelphia makes most of what he says,,, shall we say "less than accurate".

Progressive Philly clergyman, Reverend Robin Hynicka

We just received word from Arch Street Methodist Church Reverend Robin Hynicka – who has led his congregation in campaigns for the city's poor and homeless, as well as in opposition to casinos in the city – that a coalition of faith groups will be holding a prayer vigil tonight, at Arch Street Methodist at Broad and Arch, in opposition to Arizona's new immigration laws:

People of faith in Philadelphia will join their voices in prayer on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at 6pm to show support for the people of Arizona as they prepare for new extreme anti-immigrant legislation to go into effect on July 28, facing firsthand the devastating consequences of federal inaction on comprehensive immigration reform. In addition, the faith community will sign “Not in Our State” petitions calling on Gov. Rendell to oppose legislation like Arizona’s and pray for courageous leadership in Washington to act now on immigration reform that keeps families together and fixes our broken system.

Excitingly, this is part of a national faith campaign called "The Isaiah 58 Summer" – named not for this reporter, of course, but the biblical prophet who, in Chapter 58, has this to say about things:

Is this the kind of fast I have chosen,
only a day for a man to humble himself?
Is it only for bowing one's head like a reed
and for lying on sackcloth and ashes?
Is that what you call a fast,
a day acceptable to the LORD ?

6 "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?

7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe him,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
