Last week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) worked with the Philadelphia Parking Authority (PPA) to bring in local cabbies with the promise of getting them their owed credit-card payments. It was all a ploy, of course, and 23 taxi drivers got arrested and their names were placed on a deportation list.

Cabbies are currently holding a prayer vigil over the recent crackdown until 2 p.m., at PPA's offices. And they're asking an interesting question: Was this retribution from the PPA for a recent lawsuit?

Philly Tea Partiers protest health care reform in March. They've since moved
on to attacking immigration reform.

Except, Mayor Nutter has made it perfectly clear that Philadelphia is not a sanctuary city. And as of last week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was still luring in local cabbies with the promise of getting their owed credit-card payments, only to put their names on a deportation list. Also, now that the agreement between ICE and the city over its Preliminary Arraignment Reporting System ends Aug. 31 — not last week, like originally thought — nothing is set in stone, and Nutter has said that his intent is simply to protect "information about victims and witnesses of crimes."

But no matter, the Philadelphia Tea Party is protesting this "sanctuary city." An e-mail this morning from the group says:

Local and state immigration reform activists along with representatives of area-building trades unions, and tea party groups, will hold a press conference  July 8th [at 11 a.m., at the National Constitution Center] charging that politically motivated sanctuary policies that shield illegal aliens with arrest records from immigration officials makes them complicit in jeopardizing the public safety of all residents, citizens and visitors to this city.

…

Peter Gadiel, 911 Families for a Secure America remarks, "Mayor Nutter's decision to conceal illegal alien criminals from federal immigration authorities WILL result in the deaths of innocent Americans. We who have been the victims of crimes committed by illegal aliens have paid the price for such policies implemented by other politicians who are more interested in the votes of illegals and their supporters than in the safety of American citizens."

Just got word from the Loyal Opposition, a group of Republican insurgents trying to take down the Republican City Committee's de facto leader Michael Meehan and Co., that they'll be protesting tonight at the United Republican Club (3156 Frankford Ave.) at 6 p.m.  They argue that the Meehan is not recognizing several ward leaders who won fair and square, simply because they are part of the Republican insurgency. Sez the LO:

The Meehan machine is attempting to overturn the results of Ward Leader elections that occurred legally, and in conjunction with current by-laws, simply because they do not like the outcome of those valid elections. This Kangaroo Court is a fraud and disgrace to our city.

They have demonstrated a pattern of deceit, corruption, forgery, and even raising people from the dead during this entire party rebuilding effort.  They are attempting every backhanded trick to keep the Philly GOP small, quiet, and complacent to the wishes of their Democrat bosses.  The smaller the Philly GOP is, the easier it is to control.  This cannot be allowed to stand!! ?

The Clog'll keep you posted as we learn more.

Pssst: Tomorrow at noon, semi-naked LUSH employees will stand outside of their 1428 Walnut Street store, wearing only barrels that read "Time for an Oil Change or We’ll Lose It All."

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has something to do with the protest, but not everything. Sez Lush nudists:

While the world’s attention is focused on the devastation in the Gulf of Mexico, there is an even bigger environmental catastrophe unfolding in Canada, and America shoulders much of the blame. For two weeks starting on June 7th, LUSH Cosmetics is turning its 103 shops nationwide into campaign centers to raise awareness about the devastating impact of the Canadian tar sands. Shop windows will showcase images of the deforestation and open pit mining associated with the tar sands, while in-store leaflets will be handed out to customers asking them to take action by supporting Rainforest Action Network’s (RAN) fight to stop the tar sands.

Michael T. Regan

As a 14-page memo from Budget Director Stephen J. Agostini told us last week, the city will apparently pay for not adopting Mayor Nutter's proposed soda tax and per-house trash fees: We've got a $20 million budget gap, and that will lead to, among other things, $2.5 million in cuts to libraries.

53 jobs will be lost, and libraries are "certainly not going to be [open] five days a week," Michael DiBerardinis, special adviser to the mayor for the Free Library, told the Inquirer.

Which, of course, means people are gonna protest like craaaaaaazy. From an e-mail the Clog received this morning:

EMERGENCY RALLY This Thursday, June 3, 9:15 AM, outside Room 400, City Council Chambers, 4th Floor; then we'll Rally in front of the Mayor's Office on the 2nd Floor

…

If the Mayor succeeds in his plan, we will have lost 2 out of 6 library days in neighborhood branches during the last 2 years!!!

The cuts also target youth violence prevention programs, homeless services and the fire department (among other important public services!)

These cuts will be effective July 1, UNLESS WE STOP THE MAYOR!!!

You can check out the Facebook event for the rally here.

There are certain hard scientific facts that would support the Legalization, but the "orthodox" addiction medicine establishment, being anything but independent from tight DEA control, is not nearly as forthcoming with this information as it should be for scientific integrity. As opposed to alcohol and most controlled prescription drugs, marijuana use has not been associated with one single case of fatal overdose, marijuana does not have a documented physical withdrawal, and its addiction liability is only 3% compared with 10% for alcohol and around 20% for opiates, both legal (morphine) and illegal (heroin). Cannabis use has been shown to reduce the violent crime (Substance Abuse: A Comprehensive Textbook, 4-th Edition, page 267). After working for years with seriously drug-addicted patients in Philadelphia, PA, I understand the scientific fallacy of classifying cannabis in the same group with heroin and cocaine. The so-called "gateway drug" theory is by now completely discredited, but this scientific fact is not widely advertised or known. At the same time, the medicinal properties of marijuana plant are by now so clearly beyond dispute, that even the "opponents" are no longer fully comfortable in repeating the old nonsense that the plant has "no medical benefits". Between 74 and 81% of Americans support legalization of marijuana for at least medical use. I know that whatever decision people make in the end (and I hope it will be to legalize this natural medicinal plant), they should make it with all the facts at their disposal.
Perhaps the whole situation regarding the legalization of marijuana can be summarized by quoting a true expert whose dedication to scientific truth is stronger than any disinformation the "opponents" can possibly offer:

"Cannabis will one day be seen as a wonder drug, as was penicillin in the 1940s. Like penicillin, herbal marijuana is remarkably nontoxic, has a wide range of therapeutic applications and would be quite inexpensive if it were legal". Here is the letter I wrote to most PA Senators urging their support for the upcoming medical marijuana Bill:

Dear Senator (name),

I am writing to request that you co-sponsor Senator Leach's medical marijuana bill.
Medical marijuana has been found very useful in a number of serious health conditions which is now recognized by none other than the American Medical Association. In fact, it is the American Medical Association that is now urging the law-makers to change the classification of Cannabis because its current classification as a Schedule I drug contradicts all scientific reality.
While we are still undecided whether to make medical marijuana legal, the Canadian Government even pays for this medicinal plant for their veterans in recognition of the remarkable medicinal properties of Cannabis Sativa.
In particular, medical marijuana has been found useful in malnutrition, pain management, severe muscle spasms, nausea associated with chemotherapy, epilepsy and glaucoma. Recent reports indicate that it is a good treatment for migraine headaches as well, and the most recent studies even indicate that non-THC compounds of the plant may have a suppressive action on aggressive breast cancer gene. Overall, the range of medicinal applications of medical marijuana is wide and growing, while the concerns associated with its use are greatly exaggerated.
As a Pennsylvania physician certified by the American Society of Addiction Medicine since 2004, I want to briefly comment on the concerns usually expressed in connection with medical marijuana use.
First, it would really be a scientific distortion to suggest that marijuana, which does not have either a lethal overdose associated with its use, or a documented physical withdrawal syndrome, so characteristic of opiates, "nerve" and "sleeping" pills or alcohol, for that matter, is less safe than any of those substances; the so-called "gateway drug" theory has been discredited by the science of addiction medicine and, no less importantly, cannabis use suppresses violent crime (Substance Abuse: A Comprehensive Textbook, 4-th Edition, page 267).
As a Program Physician in Philadelphia drug-addiction clinics for years, I observed first hand the devastating physical dependence that many currently used prescription drugs cause; however, the only cases of "pure" marijuana "addiction" were those referred by the parole and probation departments after failing a drug test. Let me just point out to you that if medical marijuana was used for pain management, this would allow to reduce the doses of dangerous and highly addictive opiates such as Morphine or Oxycontin, thereby rendering the treatment much safer.
What about the possible addiction liability of medical marijuana? I believe the numbers will be more demonstrative than words: Marijuana's addiction liability is 3%, compared with 10% for alcohol, 20% for opiates and between 50 and 75% for nicotine. What does this mean? It means that one out of 10 people exposed to alcohol will develop some kind of problem drinking disorder and 20 out of 100 people exposed to opiates may develop subsequent addiction or dependence, but only 3% of marijuana users go ahead to develop some kind of dependency. This is what one of the country's leading expert says about medical marijuana:

"Cannabis will one day be seen as a wonder drug, as was penicillin in the 1940s. Like penicillin, herbal marijuana is remarkably nontoxic, has a wide range of therapeutic applications and would be quite inexpensive if it were legal".
Dr. Lester Grinspoon, professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Los Angeles Times, May 5, 2006

Senator, if the drug (any drug) has not been implicated in fatal overdoses or physical dependence and at the same time is highly effective in some very serious medical conditions, the case for the drug's acceptance to me is obvious; recent ABC and CBS polls indicate that between 74 and 81% of Americans support legalization of medical marijuana. These are very significant numbers, and it it a duty of our elected Representatives to act upon them and heed the wishes of the voters.
Senator, I strongly urge you to cosponsor this Bill for the sake of seriously ill Pennsylvanians as well as for the sake of Scientific Integrity (capital letters) itself.

Thank you Leonard Krivitsky, MD,DD

In this week's cover story, I wrote about the Philadelphia Tea Party.

If you're interested in seeing the group in person, head to LOVE Park today from noon to 2 p.m. — the members are throwing their second annual Tax Day protest there. Even more interestingly, perhaps, is that some local Tea Party members fear the Crash the Tea Party! group may infiltrate the protest.

Disappointing to see Holly branding the Tea Party Patriots as a racist group. I assumed she'd do at least a cursory investigation into the bogus claims by the left surrounding the alleged racial slurs. It was a totally manufactured and untrue claim. Andrew Breitbart has offered $100K to anyone producing proof of these allegations. With hundereds of video cameras rolling, many by the staff members of the Congressional Black Caucus, not a single incident of a racial slur. Not one; and it was exactly what they were looking for. A manufactured event that didn't pan out for them. Sad when reality doesn't comport with the pre-conceived notions of the left. But hey, the New York Times printed it anyway so it must be true, right? After all, the NYT is the left wing Bible.

This is the one of the most fun-sounding protests we've heard of in a while:

Join Riders Against Gender Exclusion (RAGE) for a drag show style action. This public performance will show SEPTA that its transgender/genderqueer riders demand respect and attention, we will not... stay quiet while SEPTA ignores its promises for a safer transit system.

SEPTA continues to insist on the use of M/F gender stickers on it’s fare cards, subjecting transgender, genderqueer and other gender non-conforming riders to questioning and harassment when their sticker doesn’t match their perceived gender.

SEPTA says that they don’t want their riders experiencing unnecessary discrimination due to their gender. In October, SEPTA committed to taking steps to set up a way for riders to report incidents resulting from the gender sticker policy, promising that they would address these complaints to ensure more safety and respect for transgender riders. It’s been five months and SEPTA has not taken a single step to follow through on what they promised.

It's also for a good cause: SEPTA's insistence on not getting rid of its M/F gender stickers — seemingly to discourage people from using their opposite-sex friends' and family members' fare cards as their own, as if that's really a disincentive — is insensitive and pointless.

The protest will go from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m., at the plaza across from City Hall.

Coca-Cola employees, restaurant owners, and even Councilpersons Brian O’Neill and Frank Rizzo Jr. gathered today at noon at City Hall to protest Mayor Nutter's proposed 2-cent-per-ounce soda tax.

Since the tax was revealed earlier this month, Mayor Nutter has been arguing that it will not only generate revenue, but also promote better health and lower obesity rates for Philadelphia residents. Protesters, however, question why the city is only targeting soda as a perpetrator of obesity.

"What about McDonalds or Tastycakes?" asks Frank Berthcsi, an employee of Coca-Cola for 35 years. (More than 50 Coca-Cola employees attended the rally.) “It’s unjust the way they’re singling out soda companies.”

"If the Mayor taxed cheesesteaks he'd be out of office in a day," adds Ed Doile, a Coca-Cola production employee.

"I coach high school football," he continues. "The kids drink soda every day." Haasz also argues that soda drinkers are often healthy, citing his two sons as avid soda drinkers who have never been overweight.

Coca-Cola employees claim the tax will cause as many as 2,000 employees to lose their jobs, starting with those in management.

"I'd like to retire from Coca-Cola, but I won't if this goes through," says John Ilisco, a manager at Coca-Cola. "Managers are first to go."

Coca-Cola and Pepsi employees, along with the American Beverage Association, organized the event.

I woke up today unable to contain my frustration about the misleading information I am seeing in regard to the proposed soda tax and also the disproportionate focus some are trying to put on to the consumption of sugar alone.

Sugar has calories. Yes, we know that. But let’s be clear: lots of healthy foods (like say, fruit) contain sugar and also, if you consumed NO calories, well, you wouldn’t do very well…. Of course there is a major obesity problem in this country. There is also a general health crisis in this country. However, trying to somehow place the blame entirely on sugar or on beverages like soda that are sweetened with sugar, is myopic at best, and misleading at worst.

For instance, a lot was made recently in the press about a study released that concluded that there is a link between regular consumption of traditional soft drinks and pancreatic cancer. My dad just recovered from pancreatic cancer which nearly killed him a year ago. I am particularly sensitive to severity and risks of this illness. If you look at the anecdotal information passed around in the popular press on this study you will find that they claim that people who consumed soda regularly over prolonged periods of time were, according to that study, 87% more likely to contract pancreatic cancer. However, in that same study, they point out that people who consumed juice had no greater incidence of pancreatic cancer. Juice typically has an even higher sugar content and calorie count than even traditional soda. (Granted, the sugar is naturally occurring and was not “added”—but nevertheless, it is THERE.) So, people who drank soda got pancreatic cancer, but people who drank juice (with MORE sugar and calories) did not. Conclusion (according to that study): it was the SUGAR in soda that got people sick. I have not seen anyone in the press call them on this. I still can’t figure out why. In addition, did anyone ever stop to think that people who drink traditional soda everyday may also be more likely to have other unhealthy habits that are contributing factors (such as smoking or lack of exercise)?? Here’s my favorite part: what about the OTHER ingredients in traditional soda?? They often contain artificial sweeteners, preservatives like potassium sorbate or sodium benzoate, and many other artificial ingredients. Is there any chance that any of those chemicals might contribute to a greater incidence in cancer? Not according to that “study”—it’s the sugar. Just the sugar, everyone. Calories kill. I guess we all need to stop eating.

At Snow Beverages we pride ourselves on making healthy products. I have been a vegetarian since 1980 (when I was 14) and I am committed to never making a product that contains any ingredient that is unhealthy. Is sugar unhealthy? No. Is TOO MUCH sugar unhealthy? Of course. However, as I stated earlier, orange juice has substantially more calories than our soda. Is orange juice unhealthy?….

Traditional soda contains unhealthy ingredients. We simply don’t use them. Diet soda contains many ingredients that I would never let me family consume. I have two five year old twin sons. I have absolutely no problem with them drinking a little Snow Natural Soda + Vitamins. I would never let them drink traditional diet soda. Rather than have our children misled and pushed into drinking diet soda (with it’s chemical artificial sweeteners and it’s preservatives that some claim are low-level carcinogens) why not teach them to look at health from an overarching and global perspective? Let’s be responsible and teach them to be as well. They should eat balanced and healthy diets. They should try and avoid chemical ingredients. They need to exercise regularly. If they do this, they will not become obese. Taxing soda won’t save them. It will temporarily put some money in the depleted state coffers and then it may have a myriad of other negative long-term economic effects (such as layoffs at local soda manufacturers, a strain on already-strapped low income families, etc.) but this “band-aid” attempt to raise revenue that is posing as some sort of “quick-fix” for the health and obesity problems in our state and our world, is really nothing more than an ill-founded and misrepresented lie.

The “Alliance for a Healthier NY” has a website. According to my two-minute search for the domain name on Go Daddy it appears to have been registered as recently as February 4th of 2010. There is no way I could find to contact them. I would be interested to know who is funding them. On their site, there are a plethora of FAQs addressing many of the major questions related to this issue. I find them to be extremely biased, one-sided and in fact, in many cases, rather misleading. Below are a few examples, along with my comments below their answers:

Q. What are sugar-sweetened beverages?

AHNYN Answer: For the proposed tax, sugar-sweetened beverages are soft drinks that contain more that 10 calories per 8 ounces. They include sweetened water, soda, sports drinks, “energy” drinks, colas, sweetened bottled coffee or tea, and sweetened fruit or vegetable drinks containing less than 70% natural fruit or vegetable juice. Milk, milk products, milk substitutes, dietary aids, and infant formula are exempt.

Stu’s Comment: So, for some reason if it is juice or milk-based the amount of calories is suddenly unimportant?? This seems arbitrary and absurd, and purely politically-minded.

Q. Why tax only sugar-sweetened beverages? Other foods, like Twinkies and Ding Dongs, provide empty calories.

AHNYN Answer: There is significant evidence linking sugar-sweetened beverage consumption with obesity and other health problems. Studies that follow people for a long time show that people who consume more sugar-sweetened beverages gain more weight. One article that reviewed many studies found that drinking sugar-sweetened beverages had the strongest link with overweight and obesity, more than any other food-related behavior. When people drink a sugar-sweetened beverage, they do not compensate (i.e., reduce their concomitant or subsequent caloric intake) for the additional calories from the drink. So the calories from the drink become “extra” calories.

Stu’s Comment: Do I even need to respond? I guess they are claiming that soda is “the worst” and they just sort of “skip over” the question about Ding Dongs. If they actually care about health and/or obesity, why not tax Ding Dongs too? [By the way, out of respect for the Ding Dong people I would like to point out that I didn’t reference their brand—they did…]

Q. Shouldn’t all sodas be taxed, diet and non-diet? Diet sodas are not good for people, either.

AHNYN Answer: While drinking diet soda is not recommended, the evidence linking its consumption with poor health outcomes and/or obesity is weaker than the evidence for sugar-sweetened sodas. The most healthful drinks are water and low-fat or fat-free milk.

Stu’s Comment: What study done by independent researchers concluded that taxing soda will force people to give it up, avoid diet soda, and somehow switch to milk (wait—only low-fat milk, since regular milk isn’t being taxed either) and water??? Clearly this has nothing to really do with “health” or diet soda, which is, in my opinion, dramatically more unhealthy than consuming some natural cane sugar, would be taxed doubly. In addition, I guess they missed the studies that claim that diet soda confuses the sweetness receptors in the brain and leads to the body’s mismanagement of sugar and insulin levels. Some claim that diet soda actually ends up backfiring and causing more obesity than it prevents. There is all sorts of data saying that people who drink diet soda are more likely to be obese. I wouldn’t quote those sources because I think that is also confusing, but let’s not pretend that diet soda is some kind of magic cure for obesity.

Q. Won’t taxing non-diet soda just encourage people to drink diet soda, which is not really a healthier alternative?

AHNYN Answer: With increased public awareness surrounding the tax, we expect people to switch to healthier beverages like water and low-fat milk.

Stu’s Comment: Why? The assumptions here are unbridled….

Q. Aren’t people opposed to a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages?

AHNYN Answer: A majority of New York adults support a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages. In a poll conducted by the Healthcare Education Project in January of 2010, 78% of the people polled supported a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages if the revenue raised was to be used to prevent healthcare cuts.

Stu’s Comment: So…. I guess they are certain that the people of the state of NY aren’t actually concerned about those “health care cuts” they reference in passing and completely (in my humble opinion) twist out of context.

The fact is, people should eat and drink healthy and natural products. Taxing any beverage that has sugar in it (even natural cane sugar) will not solve any widespread health problem or any obesity problem. It may cause more economic damage than it provides in tax revenues. Furthermore, it detracts from a comprehensive and responsible dialogue on these important and timely issues or their actual solutions. Don’t be fooled.

And in case it interests you: InPDUM, one of the many groups at this event, will be holding a townhall meeting on the topic of police brutality at LAVA (4134 Lancaster Ave., 215-387-6155) on March 31 at 7:30 p.m.
