How is fashion like boxing? Find out at Illuminare.

Who knew fashion could be like boxing: a swift assessment of the opponent, surprise uppercuts and a cocky victory lap to round out your win. Illuminare, an event put on by arts organization RAW, is an appropriate ring for the battle of fashion that's about to go down — minus the blood, sweat and swollen eyes, of course. Along with a friendly showcase of artists' work, one of four local thread makers will be dubbed Fashion Designer of the Year.

In corner number one is the woman already taking the city by storm with sexy dresses and sharp silhouettes that, at times, beg for a Gaga reference: Carmelita Couture. The daring darling of Old City will have her ladies on the runway strutting glitz, gold and a champagne attitude not to be messed with.

Contenders and local badasses Bullet Babe will be in attendance with new wood-carved jewelry made especially for the match. Ronnie Bullets and Babz G. are the duo of designers who meld mystery and humor with their skull bead necklaces and bracelets and raccoon boner earrings. Why the name? They're made from the bone of a furry bandit's baby maker. Duh.

Also battling for the crown (we don't know if there's a crown, but there should be) is former Betsey Johnson intern and purveyor of Philly's girly punk fashion, Leah Delfiner. Her line, Pretty Pretty Rebel, focuses on fashion as art with overt statements that represent the city's wilder side.

And Sherry Michelle will offer a softer touch with romantic gowns and muted colors that may seem docile, but don't be fooled: Her gentle styles can go toe to toe with any of her contemporaries. Good luck to all the designers. Now, let's get ready to rumble.

Thu., July 7, 8 p.m., $10, G Lounge, 111 S. 17th St., 215-564-1515, rawartists.org.
