Sophmore Effort

Veruca Salt, we feel your pain.

Although our premiere issue of EarSHOT was snatched up like free TastyKakes, we feared the curse of one-hit wonderdom. The panic struck during our staff meeting for the second issue of EarSHOT, after G. Love's lovely mug hit the stands.

Someone suggested a front page expose:

"The Hooters: What Went Wrong?"

No, no.

"Swimsuit Issue featuring Ed Rendell and Patti LaBelle!" someone shouted.

Uh, maybe.

Then we turned to our interns - a few of whom work for the Daily Pennsylvanian's irreverent weekly edition, 34th Street - for ideas. "How about this trend I see all over Penn," said Ben Kim, the culture editor at Street. "You know, the way people wear backpacks in front?"

"Oh no!" warned 34th Street music and scene editor Ben Dietz. "He's been trying to pitch us that idea for a solid year now. No one does that!"

The controversy got us all riled up: punches flew, our creative dam broke and the ideas came a-flowin'.

For March our cover boy is artist Marc Brodzik, who helped revamp the Trocadero with his unique pop-art know-how. Also on the style front, photographer Dominic Episcopo and stylist Teri-Lyn Pugliese take us snowboarding, and vintage gal Jen Darr investigates the feather trend.

Musically, we check out the life of a session musician, Philly's own Chuck Treece, as well as indie rockers Blonde Redhead and punk rock perennial Mike Watt. Geeta Dalal sneaks us inside Snugfit Studios for her first installment of In Studio. And Neil Gladstone finds a guy who gives new meaning to the term soundwaves.

If you'd like to get in touch with us, offer any story ideas you might have, or review our second (here comes one of those awful music critic words) effort, please write us. We love fan mail, we love hate mail, we even welcome colorfully phrased indifference. In the last issue we forgot to include our address in the masthead. Don't worry, we're all taking gingko root supplements now.

Our snail mail: EarSHOT, 206 S. 13th St. Phila., PA 19107. Our email address: earshot@citypaper.net.

Hopefully, with this second issue, we'll go platinum.
