Fairway To Heaven What? Rockin' to Rage Against the Machine on a golf course? Most definitely, says Adam Bradshaw, a Penn junior and captain of the Quaker Golf squad. Though mild-mannered off the links, Bradshaw knows exactly the kind of tunes that put him in the mood for makin' par. "To get myself pumped up for golf," he says, "I'd have to say [it would be] Rage." For a more relaxed vibe, he's gotta go with James Taylor or Fleetwood Mac. Still, he says, you're not going to find much in the way of country, or even alternative rock. "Actually, a lot of golfers are into that Kenny Loggins song - the theme to Caddyshack," he explains. Asked what Tiger Woods was psyching himself up to before his Masters victory, Bradshaw replied, "Probably 'Eye of the Tiger.' He's very into himself." Despite the lack of rock 'n' roll on the clubhouse speakers, though, Bradshaw sees a place for rockers on the green. Citing examples like Alice Cooper, who is an avid golfer, the Beastie Boys and J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr., Adam says he likes the idea of having a little R 'n' R on the course. "The great thing about [rockers playing golf] is that it combines two stereotypically opposite things." He adds that with the increasing diversity of golfers today, "If I saw an alternative band wearing Ashworth shirts, it wouldn't surprise me." There is "a lot more character in the golf world now," he explains. In a conservative sphere dominated by dowdy bands playing for old people, rockers are a welcome addition. In fact, he says, the disco godfathers of Tavares ("Disco Inferno") were among the most fun golf partners he's ever had. "They were a riot," Bradshaw says. Ultimately, Bradshaw says, any rocker aspiring to know whether to use a sand wedge or a seven iron should go straight to the source: Caddyshack. The movie, he says, does an excellent job in elucidating some of the golf world's more subtle nuances. "You can learn a lot from Caddyshack," he says. And judging by Tiger Woods' success, Rocky 2 probably contains a tip or two as well. - Ben Dietz |
