A Scene from Butch Camp
International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival
Feeling like an idiot for missing all the buzz at PrideFest? Feeling
too straight and narrow? The Third Annual International Gay and
Lesbian Film Festival will certainly sort you out!
Over 125 films are scheduled, including opening night's much-anticipated
Broadway Damage - a comedy/drama oozing with local connections. Director Victor
Mignatti grew up in Jenkintown and producer David Topel lives
in Center City. Actors, crew and money come from local areas as
well.
Then there's the thrill of seeing Clive Barker films on the big
screen and getting a chance to meet the man behind Pinhead in
Hellraiser. His new film, Lord of Illusions, will also be screened. The documentary The Hamster Factor and Other Tales of 12 Monkeys, directed by partners and Philly locals Lou Pepe and Keith Fulton
is another promoting the gay-behind-the-camera angle.
For those looking for films that say, "I'm here, I'm queer, I'm
not going away!" you can check out Butch Camp, Isle of Lesbos and Latin Boys Go To Hell, among others. Documentaries abound with Body Without Soul, I Was a Jewish Sex Worker, Licensed to Kill and It's Elementary. Plenty for gay, lesbian, bi, trans and just about anyone with
good taste in films.
Schmoozing opportunities on opening night (July 10) are at Pasta
Blitz, and the not-to-miss Hellraiser Party with Clive Barker at Shampoo on July 11. The closing party
is at Fluid (July 20), and there are about five other parties
throughout the festival. So come out, come out, wherever you are!
Films are screened at the Arts Bank, Ritz 5, Ritz at the Bourse,
Gershman Y and International House. Tickets are available at Arts
Bank and by phone at Upstages. Check out the special Festival
10-pass ($55) or pay $6.50 per show.
July 10-21. For info contact the festival Web site at www.tlavideo.com/piglff or the hotline at 790-1510 ext. 33.
- Sarah Armour
Shanghai Trunk Company
Who says you have to migrate to the Village to hear jazz with
an edge? Sarah Cain and Steve Wood don't think so. They introduced
their independent production company in May, with a Monday night
series at Ortlieb's Jazzhaus that has been turning a lot of heads.
The Shanghai Trunk Company has already booked such jazz luminaries
as Skip Heller, Uri Caine, Odean Pope and Cecil McBee, along with
up-and-coming New York City acid groups like Jazzheads and The
Sex Mob. Cain and Wood start a new series in July - Tuesday nights
at The Five Spot. It promises to be a wild ride; the Five Spot
series debut features the incendiary saxophone of Oliver Lake
(July 15), trumpeter Dave Douglas and the Tiny Bell Trio (July
22), and Charlie Hunter's eight-string wizardry (July 29).
Mondays at Ortlieb's Jazzhaus, Third & Poplar Sts.; Tuesdays at
The Five Spot, 5 S. Bank St. Info: 382-3198.
