Style Wars

Alodie Perez, 20, Philadelphia College of Textiles, Senior

Designers of the past are often sources for fashions of the future. Here, Alodie Perez's gorgeous reversible coat of loden velvet lined with gold lamé was inspired by Yves Saint Laurent's 1969 winter collection. Topped with bright green turkey feathers, the coat is timelessly elegant.

"We were asked to take a designer and interpret them in our own way. I really love couture. Yves Saint Laurent's 1969 collection was very luxurious, very theatrical."

Underneath the coat is Perez's very '60s empire-waist dress with bell sleeves. Much of the ensemble was sewn by hand, says Perez, who hopes to someday have her own couture line. "Eventually I'd like to work in a more intimate setting, with a small designer, perhaps. That way I get to see things first hand."

A perfect next step for Perez: a designer with tremendous technical flare and ingenuity.
