Style Wars

Meghan Curry and Kimberly Bennet, both 22, Philadelphia College of Textiles, Seniors

Meghan and Kimberly were faced with a creative quandary: As students in "Problem Solving" class at Textile, they were asked to create a dress based on the theme of "geography," use non-traditional materials and make it for under $10.

Ouch.

Together the two came up with the "Volcano Dress," a flaming orange, red and yellow design crafted out of floral arrangements, knit fabrics and netting.

"My roommate had a bunch of books on volcanoes," says Meghan, "so we looked at those."

Kimberly pipes in, "We looked at the crown of the volcano. It had all this smoke coming out of it so that it was lit up like the color of fire with pinks and oranges. We used that idea for the headdress."

Meghan, who loves the flamboyancy of Versace, and Kimberly, who eventually wants to be a costume designer, came up with this dramatic, fiery solution to their problem.
