wack
When Dave Barry's Book of Bad Songs (Andrews McMeel Publishing, $12.95) came into the earSHOT office earlier this year we were stunned. Already working on
the "Worst Music Ever" issue, we thought Barry had somehow read
our minds and wrote a 94-page book before we could publish the
special edition. Alas, it turns out that the newspaper columnist
has been polling his readers about bad songs over the past couple
of years (but who reads newspapers?). So, if you liked earSHOT's "Worst Music Ever" issue, you'll love the Book of Bad Songs. The chapters on Weenie Music, Teen Death songs and Songs Women
Really Hate are filled with goofy insight. "MacArthur Park" won
the survey of worst songs for its cheeseball lyrics about leaving
a cake in the rain. There are special categories for lame music
made by people named Bobby (Bobby Vinton, Bobby Rydell and Bobby
McFerrin) and the top 10 songs that Top 40 bands hate most ("Stairway
to Heaven" made six out of the 10 slots). Buy it for the persnickety
music cynic in your life.
