The Week in Eats

Philly Beer Week 2012 Opening Tap
Fri., June 1, 7 p.m., free
Philadelphia is celebrating Beer Week 2012 — technically 10 full days of organized inebriation — starting June 1. This opening ceremony will feature the third annual "Brew-vitational" awards, through which the Philadelphia Inquirer honors local beers, as well as the introduction of the infamous Hammer of Glory, created by William Reed of Standard Tap and Mike "Scoats" Scotese of Grey Lodge Pub. (Mayor Nutter "taps" the first keg by smashing it open with the Hammer.) This year's honorary Opening Tap beer is Brotherly Suds 3, produced at Tröegs' new location in Hershey. Independence Mall, Sixth and Market streets, phillybeerweek.org.

Foie Fridays
Every Friday in June, $10
Starting June 1, a roster of city restaurants will introduce "Foie Friday," a chef's protest of sorts in response to California's upcoming ban on foie gras. The initiative, spearheaded by Ela's Jason Cichonski, will see $10 foie dishes served at multiple locations every Friday this month; notables include Matyson, Bibou, McCrossen's Tavern, Mémé, Brauhaus Schmitz and Bistrot La Minette. Check out the #foiefriday Twitter for information, news and banter.

Fairmount Restaurant Week
Wed., May 23-Sun., June 3, $12-$35
In an effort to spotlight the new Barnes Foundation and other attractions in the area, the Fairmount CDC is sponsoring the first-ever Fairmount Restaurant Week. In partnership with With Art Philadelphia, each participant will service a two- to three-course menu for $35 or less; notables include Lemon Hill, Trio, La Calaca Feliz, Bridgids and Hickory Lane.
