October 11th has all sorts of historical and cultural significance (did you know that the date marked the debut of Saturday Night Live in 1974 or that it's the birthday of Greek long jumper Niki Zanthou? Really!) But aside from all of that, October 11th is National Sausage Day!
In honor of this very important holiday we encourage you to sample the encased meat offerings of one (or more) of the city's venerable sausage sellers. We're particularly fond of the wurst plate at Brauhaus Schmitz (718 South St.) that brings together five links of chef Jeremy Nolen's awesome sausages. If you're feeling adventurous you might want to head up to Port Richmond to Czerw's Kielbasy (3370 Tilton St.) for a some smoked kielbasa or kabanosa i.e. the Polish Slim Jim. Of course, you can't really go wrong with a sausage sandwich from George's Sandwich Shop (900 S. 9th St.) in the Italian Market. Anyway, go eat some sausage.
