If the zombie film ever gets its own Mount Rushmore, the late Lucio Fulci deserves to be hewn in stone right next to George Romero. But the Italian director, who upped the gore quotient in classics like The Beyond and City of the Living Dead, was far from a one-genre pony. Exhumed Films is closing its 15th-anniversary year with a double feature of lesser-known, rarely screened Fulci contributions to other well- (if not wisely) populated genres. Conquest is a typically nonsensical entry in the brief but beloved sword-and-sorcery revival of the early 1980s, with fever-dream monsters and barely clad women. And The Brute and the Beast (1966) is Fulci’s take on the spaghetti western starring Franco Nero, the screen’s original Django.
