The upcoming release of The 3dom Factor marks Barry Altschul’s first release as a leader in more than a quarter-century, and celebrates the legendary drummer’s 70th birthday. Even with a few large gaps, his discography is staggering: membership in the landmark ensemble Circle with Dave Holland, Anthony Braxton and Chick Corea; key partnerships with Braxton, Paul Bley and Sam Rivers; collaborations running the gamut from ECM to the AACM. The members of his new trio are well-chosen to follow Altschul on a typically all-encompassing sojourn through jazz’s stylistic diversity. He worked with bassist Joe Fonda for years as part of the collective FAB Trio, along with the late Billy Bang; and saxophonist Jon Irabagon shares Altschul’s ability to juggle the music’s history with playful dexterity. Together, the trio uses free jazz as a launch pad for joyful time travel.
